Holidays in Asau

Asau is a destination with heaps of cool stories to tell. If you think your life's been a bit dull lately, a trip here is the perfect answer!

If you head 100 kilometres of Asau, you'll discover the well-known city of Apia.

Take a long, deep breath and appreciate the natural surroundings of Peapea Cave. It lies 18 kilometres away from Asau. You can also find a bit of peace and quiet at Afu Aau Falls, 45 kilometres away.

Travel 25 kilometres to the east and you'll reach Paia. It's home to some awesome sights, such as Lava Church Ruins and Paia Dwarfs Cave.

You may feel the urge to set up base in Vaitele for a while. This place is 95 kilometres away and quite close to National Parliament, Papaseea Sliding Rocks and the Faleata Golf Course. A few other nearby sights are Maketi Fou and Flea Market.

Feeling ready to chew, nibble, chomp, gnaw and drink your way across Samoa? A world of delectable flavours is waiting for you, so dress in your stretchiest jeans and bon appétit!

Once you stop and peruse a menu at a café or restaurant, you'll quickly notice that crayfish and taro are two ingredients commonly used in local cooking.

While Asau offers plenty of culinary delights, don't leave without tasting taro root seasoned and baked in oven and oka l’a (marinated raw fish). Considered regional specialties, you'll have to add them to your must-eat list if you really want to get a taste of this destination.

You may be eating your way into a bigger set of trousers, but cooked green bananas in coconut cream is certainly worth it. This favourite dessert will put your taste buds into overdrive just by looking at it.

Make use of your transit time by memorising a handful of expressions in the local tongue. 'O ai lou igoa?' can be translated as 'what's your name?'. One more often used phrase is 'Talofa' ('hello').

Do you plan to be here on the 1st of June? Luck is on your side. Each year on this day, the entire nation bands together to celebrate Independence Day Celebration.

Like all good things, your trip to Asau must eventually come to an end. When it's time to pack up your belongings and leave, say one last "Tōfā soifua" and spend your remaining holiday allowance on some unique keepsakes.

When you're all set to take to the skies, give yourself extra time to head to Faleolo International Airport (APW). Located 80 kilometres to the southeast from the middle of Asau, this is the closest terminal.
