Holidays in Alsancak

Food is good, wine is better, but travel truly hits the spot! So isn’t it about time you took a bite out of the Izmir neighbourhood of Alsancak? This interesting city is home to around 2,500,000 people — don't be scared to mingle with a few of them during your stay. Once you've touched down at Adnan Menderes Airport and pulled your suitcase from the carousel, Alsancak is a drive of 16 kilometres to the north. From central Izmir, it's located 2 kilometres north.

With a good deal of the city's top sights nearby, Alsancak is a sightseer's paradise. From the Saat Kulesi to Konak Square, you aren't going to run out of things to keep you busy. Don't forget to put Agora and Kadifekale on your list too. For a better perspective of this city as a whole, visit the nearby neighbourhoods of Old Town and Kordonboyu.

If you're on the hunt for some great sights not far from the city centre, you're not lacking in choice. One of the picks of the bunch is the Archeological Museum.

Gain a better understanding of the local culture at the Ismet Inonu Art Center, the Goethe-Institut, the Italian Cultural Center and the Izmir State Opera and Ballet.

Look closely into the glass cabinets and find out more about the artefacts on display as you stroll through the interesting collections of the Ataturk Museum, the Atatürk Evi and the Mask Museum.

Sitting down and watching a first-class show can be a wonderful experience. Book a seat at the Khan Theatre, Ragip Haykir Sahnesi, the Izmir State Theatre and the Bostanli Karsiyaka Open Air Theatre for a memorable night out.

If all the activity of city life is wearing you out, recharge your batteries with a visit to one of the nearby parks. Kulturpark, Basmane Square and Kültür Park are charming spots to kick off your shoes and relax under a tree.

A trip away is the ideal opportunity to hit up the shops and grab yourself a few treats. Be sure to stroll through Bostanli Market, Forum Bornova Shopping Center, Konak Pier Shopping Mall and Kemeralti Market!

The Ethnographic Museum, the Ahmet Piristina Museum and City Archives Place, the Ataturk Statue and Government Mansion have so many stories to tell. History geek or not, you're sure to find out something at these age-old sites.

Find out about the region's spiritual side or just reflect in the quiet surroundings of the Blue Mosque, the Hisar Mosque, the Asansor and the Beth Israel Synagogue.

Kit yourself out in green and white, head to Izmir Halkapinar Sport Hall and excitedly cheer on the Bornova Belediye. A visit to this arena is a must for any true basketball fan!
