Holidays in Alaki

As all travellers know — an adventurous life is a life well-lived. So dig out your passport, pack your things and say hello to Alaki!

Nuku Alofa is one of the most significant cities in Tonga, and it's easily reachable from Alaki. You'll find it around 9 kilometres to the northwest.

You don't need to journey too far to see some photo-worthy natural sights. Warm up the car and make your way over to Eua National Park, 30 kilometres away from Alaki, for a laid-back day. Or maybe Mapu'a 'a Vaca Blowholes is more your cup of tea? It sits just 19 kilometres away.

Make your stay an educational one by learning the history of the Captain Cook's Landing Place.

There's even more just down the road. Ha'ateiho, 12 kilometres to the west, is popular for Royal Palace of Tonga and the Tongan National Centre. Though, if St Mary's Cathedral and Basilica of St Anthony of Padua are more appealing, travel 13 kilometres northwest from Alaki to Puke.

When it comes time to tap into the adventurer within, sign up for some hiking. That said, there aren't many better ways to see the beauty of the region's landscapes than with a little caving.

Spending an hour or two outside in the fresh air does wonders for your well-being. If you're feeling a bit tense, why not relax by going beach combing or sunbathing?

Interested in spending time by the water? Add some extra excitement to your escape by going swimming or snorkeling.

Our travel itineraries are often at the whim of the weather forecast, but fortunately that isn't the case with everything. Rain, hail or shine, look around the region's nature museums, history museums, art galleries and indoor markets any time you like.

If you ask some locals about places to go in the surrounding area, you'll most likely be directed to the lovely farms, open-air markets and gardens.

If you'd like to delve into the region's past, why not swing by a few of its traditional villages and archeological sites? Do some research beforehand so you don't waste any time.

If you're looking for an experience beyond the material world, you might like to visit some local churches. It's a fine opportunity to learn a bit about Alaki's religious beliefs.

'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' according to George Bernard Shaw, but add travel to the mix and it's a match made in heaven. You're invited to indulge in two of your greatest loves by eating and drinking your way across Tonga.

If you're flicking through a menu, there's every chance you'll see meals featuring rice or taro. They're just some ingredients regularly used in the cooking here.

No food-obsessed traveller would leave Alaki without digging into one or two of the local specialties, such as lu (beef and coconut wrapped in taro leaves) and feke (grilled ocotpus/squid).

Dessert is always a good idea on holiday, so why not indulge in some fresh fruit? It's worth every scrumptious calorie!

There's so much more to travelling than ticking off sights and trying out local cuisine. It's also about interacting with the people and their culture. Get the most out of your Tonga getaway by learning a handful of expressions and greetings in the local tongue. To start with, try to pronounce 'Fēfē hake?'. It translates to 'how are you?'. Another one to commit to memory is 'Sai pē, mālō, fēfē koe?', meaning 'fine thanks, and you?'.

Before you say your final "Nofo ā " to Alaki, check your pockets for any stray change that you can spend on some last-minute keepsakes.

If you're travelling via air, it's probably wise to decide a route to the terminal in advance. From the middle of Alaki, you'll need to go around 7 kilometres south to Fua'amotu International Airport (TBU), the nearest airport.
