The nation's capital, Beijing, sits 1,700 kilometres north of Xiamen, while Lieyu can be found 30 kilometres to the southeast.

If you're the kind of traveller who simply loves seeing the star attractions, the Wanshi Botanical Garden is waiting for you to head to.

It isn't always easy to find activities that the entire family will enjoy. Luckily, sights such as Xiamen Kuailegu Water Park, Huli Park and Guanyin Mountain Dream Coast Vocation Area mean this won't be an issue in Xiamen.

Are your children curious about the world of wildlife? Take them to visit the Xiamen Nanshun Crocodile Park, where inquisitive young minds can learn about what an animal loves to eat, the types of sounds it makes and a whole lot more!

Botany experts and novices alike will be glad to learn about this area's wide-ranging plant collections. For a blossom-filled day, start off with a leisurely stroll around the impressive beds at the Xiamen Botanical Garden. Once you're done there, head over to the HuaZhanGuan, where the diversity of species alone is worth beholding. For those who are more devoted, the Garden Expo on Water and the Xiamen Yuanbo Garden also have some nice floral exhibits.

Zhong Lun Park and Xianyue Park are the ideal places to catch some sun, enjoy a picnic or just watch life pass by. If you're looking for more options, stake out a good spot and let the afternoon pass lazily by at Riyuegu Aquatic Park or Guanhai Garden.

Xiamen Dragon Boat Pond and Xiamen Xinglinwan Fishing Park will delight your senses. Not just because of the refreshing breezes and scenic views that accompany freshwater lakes, but for the vitality of the native waterbirds that congregate there, too. If you could do with some more breathing space by the waterside, plan another excursion to Xiamen Twelve Dragons Lake.

You probably know about its best shopping centres or squares, but don't forget that Xiamen has some marvellous natural havens too. Xiamen Tianzhu Mountain Tourism Scenic Spot and Riguang Mountain are two to think about. Two additional areas to check out are Fujian Rare Species of Marine Nature Reserve and Huxi Cave.

Go to Shengma Gong or DongFu ChengShi GuiHua ZhanShiGuan if the weather's looking less-than-perfect. Study the educational displays or just take a moment in the peaceful settings. WangJiang WenHua YiShu ZhanLanGuan and the Guanfu Museum are also worthwhile alternatives.

The wonderful world of science never ceases to amaze us. Expand your knowledge on the latest in technology and innovation at the Exotic World Natural Science Museum and the Xiamen Youth Science and Technology Museum. For even more eye-opening exhibits, add the XiaMenShi QingShaoNian TianWen KeJiGuan and the Xiamen Science Museum to your journey of discovery.

With a good number of splendid art exhibitions to choose from, you might need a helpful push in the right direction. We suggest picking up a strong coffee and heading over to the Little Egret Art Center or the Xiamen Piano Museum. More unique paintings and inventive sculptures can be found at the Oriental Fish Bone Art Museum and the DongFang YuGu YiShuGuan.

Calling all history buffs! You can learn more about the rich and diverse past of the region at the XiaMen DaXue XiaoShi ZhanLanGuan and the Xiamen Museum. You'll also discover intriguing exhibits which bring the past to life at the TongAn ZhanTing and the Tong'an Museum.

Gain an understanding of the past when you stop at the Xiamen University and the Taiwan Folk Village. Why not also call in at Yongze Hall Lin's Cemetery and Jingzhi Pagoda Base Palace?

Customers keen on military history shouldn't miss Hulishan Cannon Fort and Huli Mountain Fort. Visualise the mighty sieges that went on there and learn about the ingenious defensive features that made them difficult to attack.

If you've ever faced the challenge of decorating a room, you'll be sure to appreciate the huge amount of effort that has gone into the lavish interior of Ciji Palace of Qingjiao.

Whether you're a believer or not, houses of worship like the Nanputuo Temple and the Zhongde Gong are sure to be among the most peaceful and uplifting sights you’ll encounter in your travels. Another option is to check if there are any tours available at the Tianjie Temple and the Xiamen Tong'an Confucian Temple.

When you're travelling, keep in mind that it's sometimes the less celebrated sites that you'll most fondly recall once you're home. Some places which fit that bill in Xiamen are the Jimei Cultural Arts Center and Haiwan Park. Two more worthwhile attractions are Yanwu Bridge and Haicang Bridge.
