Holidays in Wau

Armchair travelling not cutting it these days? Dying to experience the real thing? Wau is the perfect place to start. You'll find it among the dazzling rural landscapes, beaches, coastal plains and forests of Papua New Guinea. (You might have to venture off the tourist trail a bit, but isn't that what travelling is all about?)

It's situated 240 kilometres to the north of Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea.

The Wau Ecology Institute is waiting to be explored. After that, you may like to take some great holiday photos at Butterfly Ranch.

Like to venture outwards a bit? Bulolo is 17 kilometres to the northwest of Wau and Manga is 40 kilometres to the north. Hop in the car and find out what's out there!

If you're keen for something a bit more engaging, you could check out the local mountain climbing options. Or perhaps hiking is something you'd like to try? Whichever you opt for, you're bound to have a fun time.

Confused about what to see and do first? Sometimes the best way to see it all is to sign on for a tour. The region offers some interesting guided nature walks and wildlife spotting tours.

From swimming to snorkeling, there's no shortage of ways to get out on the water in Papua New Guinea. Just don't forget your sunscreen!

If you find yourself stuck in miserable weather, take cover in one of the region's craft workshops.

You'd be hard-pressed to think of a nicer way to appreciate the local area than by taking in its open-air markets.

Acquaint yourself with the area's past by heading to one or two war relics and monuments. If a tour guide isn't around, make sure you do some research of your own.

Eating is one of life's greatest pleasures, and since you're reading this, we guess you think travel is too. Combine your passion for both by getting out and trying the local food and drink at various cafés, bars and restaurants in town.

An ingredient often found in the cuisine here is breadfruit (ulu). Another is coconuts. They're definitely worth trying out if you're not already a fan.

When in Wau, eat like the locals do. That means digging into a meal of chicken pot or kokoda fish, a couple of the region's signature dishes.

Still got a little give in your waistband after dinner? Then put in your order for saksak (dumplings made with sugar and sago), a delicious dessert.

Want to immerse yourself in the Independence Day celebrations? Put the 16th of September on your calendar and get ready to let your hair down!

It might be time to wave goodbye, but it doesn't have to mean for good. Why not save your spare Papua New Guinean kinas for a return trip to this attractive region?

If you'll be travelling via air, you'll likely go through Jackson International Airport (POM). It's 240 kilometres to the south. Pack your suitcases, find the best route and set that alarm clock!
