Been up 'til dawn way too often lately? Desperate for a break and a few quiet nights? Viola might just be the ticket. It sits among the forests and lakes of Wisconsin — nice and off the beaten track. (We bet you'll feel so relaxed, you'll be under the covers by sunset!)

It's situated 1,250 kilometres west of Washington, the nation's capital.

You don't have to be on the road all day to see some nature around these parts. Just 30 kilometres out of Viola, Eagle Cave is a favourite spot to enjoy some fresh air. Even more peaceful surrounds await at Kickapoo Valley Reserve Visitor Center, 11 kilometres away.

Winter sports enthusiasts won't regret staying in Viola, as it provides access to Cascade Mountain Ski Area and Mount La Crosse Ski Area. Just remember to bring your beanie and gloves! These fields can get icy indeed.

There's even more just down the road. Viroqua, 20 kilometres to the west, is known for the Fortney Underground Theater and the Viroqua Country Club. Alternatively, if Snowflake Ski & Golf Club and Jersey Valley County Park are more appealing, head 25 kilometres northwest from Viola to Westby.

Riverside Park, the City Brewery and Pettibone Park are all quite close to La Crescent, 60 kilometres to the northwest. Need some more reasons to check it out? Hixon House and the La Crosse Queen Cruise Dock aren't far away either.
