Holidays in Ugo

Tossing and turning all night? Could be that adventurous spirit of yours! So what are you waiting for? Get up, dig out your passport and book a ticket to Ugo!

It's located 390 kilometres north of Tokyo, the capital of Japan.

Mother Nature's handiwork is yours to explore in multiple places around Ugo. Just 30 kilometres away, Kawarage Oyutaki Falls is a terrific place to start. Mototakifukuryusui sits 35 kilometres away and is another delightful spot for some downtime.

Fans of winter sports won't regret staying in Ugo, as it offers easy access to Spring Valley Izumi Kogen Ski Area and Onikobe Ski Resort. Just remember to bring your warmest gear! These slopes can get seriously cold.

Venture further afield and see what's going on in Yokote, 20 kilometres to the northeast. Many travellers come here for Asamai Park and the Kamakaura Museum. Alternatively, Yuzawa is 25 kilometres to the southeast of Ugo. Swing by this locality for access to Sanzugawa Canyon and Road Station Ogachi Komachino Sato.

Shonai is 60 kilometres from Ugo and is an exciting part of the local region. Nearby attractions include the Five-Story Pagoda, Dewa-sanzan History Museum and Mount Haguro. Got more time to kill? Hagurosan Ski Area and Fukikoshi Shrine are also within easy reach.

Eating is one of life's biggest pleasures, and since you're reading this, you probably think travel is too. Combine your appetite for both by heading out and tasting the local food and drink at a few of the restaurants, cafés and bars in town.

Once you pull up a seat and peruse a restaurant or café menu, you'll quickly notice that beef and noodles are some ingredients popular in the local cuisine.

Of course, you can't visit Ugo without tasting tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) or jappa-jiru (fish gut and vegetable soup). Popular with residents and considered regional classics, they are a must-try experience for any self-respecting food fan.

If you're all about dessert, you won't be disappointed. Be sure to try anpan (sweet roll), a yummy treat that's guaranteed to hit your sweet spot.

It can be a challenge to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to fine beers, but one beer worth sipping on is Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen. Grab a glass and bottoms up!

Want to kick start the party? A few rounds of junmaishu will do the trick! On the rocks or in a cocktail — it's a taste sensation!

Talk to any well-travelled globetrotter and they'll tell you that the simplest way to get the most out of your getaway is to try out some local words and phrases. 'Hisashiburi' can be very handy. It's how you say 'long time no see'. One more to add to the memory bank is 'Isshoni odorimasenka?', which means 'would you like to dance?'.

Celebrated throughout the entire country, Birthday of Emperor Akihito takes place each year on the 23rd of December. If you're going to be here during this important day, it'll be hard not to get swept up in the festivities!

"Sayōnara" doesn't have to mean farewell for good. Why not put aside your spare Japanese yens for when you come back?

Ugo's closest terminal is Narita International Airport (NRT). When the time comes to pack your bag and take to the skies, head 380 kilometres to the south.
