If you're here physically but in mind you're living it up in Tolbanos, it's time to book that escape. Tolbanos' downtown area is thin on accommodation, but you can stay in one of the 3 hotels within 10 kilometres of the action.

Slip on your white gown and slippers at the Hotel II Castillas Ávila and Rusticae Hotel Molino de los Gamusinos, two of the most central options on offer.

If you're still after a place to stay and aren't satisfied with your options, you could investigate the Parador De Avila or the Apartamentos Soterraña. The first is 15 kilometres away, while the second is 14 kilometres away. Alternatively, you could make your way 15 kilometres away from central Tolbanos to the Fontecruz Avila.

It's well known that Aussies are pretty relaxed, so consider kicking back a little longer and checking out the Royal Monastery of Saint Thomas and the Museo Oriental in Avila, 15 kilometres to the southwest of Tolbanos. Some of our recommended Avila hotel options include the Hotel H2 Ávila and Hostal Le vintage. 30 kilometres to the east of Tolbanos you'll also find El Espinar, home to the Hotel Segovia Sierra de Guadarrama and El Espinar. Whether you're shooting through or staying in El Espinar, make sure you visit the Casa Club Escuela los Angeles de San Rafael and the Club De Golf Los Angeles De San Rafael.

Segovia is situated 45 kilometres from Tolbanos and has a population of 57,000. When you're there, you'd be mad if you didn't take a trip to San Antonio El Real Convent, San Justo Church and the Segovia Aqueduct. Why not also see what's going on at Plaza San Martin and San Millan Church? There are a great selection of hotels and lodgings in Segovia, with the Rusticae Hotel Palacio San Facundo and Parador de Segovia coming in at the top of the list.

Totally over airport food? Dying for a little privacy? Then you'd be mad not to see if you can snag a room at the Hilton Madrid Airport or the Meliá Barajas. Neither are too far from Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport, 90 kilometres from Tolbanos' centre.

The Avila Parador was delightful - excellent staff and a central location within walking distance of the restaurants and sights. The one problem is parking - there are comparatively few parking slots at the hotel. When we arrived, we were able to park the car temporarily in the hotel car park (blocking several other cars!) whilst unloading our cases. But I then had to move the car three streets away to find a space on a public road with white lines (which is free parking). There were hardly any spaces available on the ‘white line’ roads. The alternative would be to park slightly nearer the hotel on a ‘blue line’ road but you have to pay at a meter for blue line parking - not cheap! The following morning, I watched (like a hawk!) as guests checked out and moved my car into the hotel car park as soon as a space appeared. We have no hesitation in recommending the delightful Avila Parador but just be ready for the parking challenge!
