Wine, views and lovely old architecture – what more could you want from a country getaway? Check out our fab range of accommodation in Tenterfield and soak up the good life in this Northern NSW gem.
Local history
Tenterfield is famous for the first Federation Speech made here by Sir Henry Parks in 1889, so you can bet there’s a bit of history in these streets. Historical highlights include the Railway Station Museum and Centenary Cottage to get the lowdown on the local stories, as well as nearby St Stephens Presbyterian Church where Banjo Patterson got married. Then all you have to do is wander through town to get a feel for the place – there over 100 heritage listed buildings from the mid-19th century to ogle!
Wine, wine, wine
As a part of the Granite Belt region, and only 45 minutes south of the wine centre of Stanthorpe, Tenterfield puts you right where you want to be in this wonderful wine region of Northern NSW. Some close spots to get some local drops include Kurrajong Downs and Deetswood Winery, and a bit further away is the fab Reedy Creek Winery. The best part is that the drive is half the fun! And you can keep going all around the region to get the full taste of what’s on offer. It’s a great way to see the landscapes and in autumn, it’s spectacular!
Natural delights
There’s certainly no shortage of national parks and conservation areas for the adventurous – nearly 10, actually! Bald Rock National Park should top your list. There, you can wander through massive boulders all over the place and even climb the largest exposed granite rock in the southern hemisphere. It’s 260m high and overlooking some totally glorious bush views! Boonoo Boonoo National Park is brilliant too, especially the waterfall, which tumbles 210m down into the beautiful pools below. For pretty birds, check out Basket Swamp National Park and drop by Timbarra Lookout for super amazing views across the countryside. Other spots include Capoompeta National Park, Girraween National Park, Tooloom National Park, Koreelah National Park, Washpool National Park, and the Torrington State Conservation Area. That’s a whole lot of gorgeous sights!
Getting there
Tenterfield is in a pretty convenient spot, just over three hours southwest of Brisbane, three-and-a-half from the Gold Coast, and two-and-a-half from Byron Bay. At the junction of the New England and Bruxner Highways, you don’t need to go offroad to get there! Our closest flights though are our flights to Ballina and flights to Coolangatta.
Tenterfield won’t disappoint those seeking a chilled out country escape. The magnificent scenery, the historical remnants of days gone by and of course, the wine, will wind you down in no time.
