Holidays in Tamana

Thrills. Relaxation. Thrills. Relaxation. Off to Tamana but can't decide what sort getaway you want? Don't get in a fluster! We'll help sort it out.

The nation's capital, Tokyo, is located about 900 kilometres to the northeast of Tamana.

Does picnicking with the ocean as your backdrop sound tempting? Then organise a visit to Momochi Beach, 75 kilometres to the north.

Travel a little out of Tamana and get ready to experience some wonderful natural sights. Just 50 kilometres away, Mount Aso is a popular place to fill your lungs with fresh air. Another recommendation is Aso National Park, 50 kilometres away from Tamana.

Take a break and listen to the sound of the birds chattering at Tabaruzaka Park and Jagatani Park.

Whether you'd like to learn more about the religious aspects of the area or just relax in the peaceful atmosphere, the Rengekin Tanjoji Temple is the place to go.

Whether you're a soccer fan or you just want to experience the gripping atmosphere, try to attend a live game at KKWing Stadium, the home ground of the Roasso Kumamoto. You'll find the arena 25 kilometres away in Kumamoto.

Soak up the scenery from the chairlift at Tenzan Ski Resort as you decide on your next run. Alongside Gokase Highland Ski & Snowboard, this snow-dusted wonderland offers some of the best skiing in the region.

Seeking even more attractions? Go to Gyokuto-machi, 7 kilometres southeast of Tamana, for the Reigando Temple and Toge no Chaya Park. Alternatively, Nagasu is 10 kilometres to the west, and it's here you'll find Green Land and Ultraman Land.

Want to check out Kumamoto Castle, the Honmyo-ji Temple and Hosokawa Gyobutei? You'll find them near Kumamoto, 19 kilometres away. The Kumamoto Prefectural Traditional Crafts Centre and the Suizenji Gardens are also close at hand and should be on your itinerary.

To truly experience a destination is to taste its food and drink, so prepare to chew, chomp, sip and slurp your way across Kumamoto. The only thing you need to take with you is a good appetite!

Once you sit down and browse a menu at a restaurant, you'll discover that beef and noodles are two ingredients popular in the local cuisine.

When Tamana locals talk to you about their favourite foods, you're likely to hear tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) or hakata ramen (noodles in pork bone soup) uttered a few times. These classic meals are an important part of the region and ought to be on any food lover's list.

Still have a bit of room left after dinner? Then put in an order for anpan (sweet roll), a tempting sweet treat.

If you're feeling rather thirsty and would love to indulge in a glass of amber nectar, we suggest Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen. Take advantage of happy hour, mingle with the locals and drink up!

Craving something a bit stronger? Be sure to try junmaishu. Ask the bar person if it's nice in any mixed drinks. If that fails, request a shot glass and drink it neat!

Experienced travellers often put in some time to learn a couple of expressions in the local tongue. They find that being able to speak with the locals isn't just useful, it's good fun too! First of all, try to get your tongue around 'Konbanwa'. It means 'good evening'. 'Isshoni odorimasenka?' ('would you like to dance?') is one more you may need.

Be sure to mark the 23rd of December in your diary. To the locals, this means just one thing — Birthday of Emperor Akihito. A prominent day of celebrations, this is a terrific time of year to check out the country.

When your holiday comes to an end and it's time to say "Sayōnara" to Tamana, don't fret — it will always be there awaiting your next visit!

When you're ready to take to the skies, give yourself enough time to get to Fukuoka Airport (FUK). Sitting 75 kilometres to the north from downtown Tamana, this is the closest terminal.
