Holidays in Straupe

Forgetting what your last sickie excuse was is a sure-fire sign that you need to get away. So why not step off the beaten track to Straupe and take in the splendid forests, rivers and sandy beaches of Latvia? (The only thing you'll need to remember is how to relax!)

It's located 70 kilometres northeast of Riga, the country's capital.

There's nothing like enjoying your favorite cooling beverage by the ocean. During your stay, take the time to see Jurmala Beach, 80 kilometres to the southwest.

Break free on a journey to some nearby natural beauty spots. 20 kilometres out of Straupe, Gauja National Park is just waiting to be explored. Saulkrasti Tourist Information Center, 35 kilometres away, is another superb spot to kick back and unwind.

Seize the opportunity to head to other nearby sights, such as St. John's Church and Cesis Castle. You'll come across them 11 kilometres east in Auciems. Don't want to give back the rental car just yet? Turaida Castle and Sigulda Castle are in Sigulda, 20 kilometres to the south of Straupe.

Feel like going to the Memorial Tablet of the Northern Sons of Finland, the Nipernaadi and the Valga Town Hall? Head over to Valka, 80 kilometres to the northeast, and set up base. These attractions, as well as the Monument to Alfred Neuland and the Paju Battle Memorial, are all close at hand.

Whether you're flailing around in it, drifting on top of it or whizzing across it, nothing beats being near the water. You can take your pick of several watersports here, including wind surfing and kite surfing.

Step through the doors of the region's history museums and mansions and soak up everything they have to offer.

Want to spend the day outdoors? Organise an outing to one of the surrounding area's open-air museums.

If you're a history enthusiast, you'll be excited to hear that there are some castles and historic mansions in the local area. Journey back in time and get some insight into the region's intriguing past.

There's no need to be religious to enjoy Straupe's churches and cathedrals. Learn a bit about local belief systems and find some peace and quiet while you're at it.

To truly experience a destination is to sample its food and drink, so get ready to crunch, munch, slurp and sip your way around Latvia. The only thing you need to bring with you is a robust appetite!

Once you settle in and look over a café or restaurant menu, you'll quickly realise that potato and egg are some ingredients commonly used in the local cuisine.

Are you searching for an iconic Straupe dining experience? There are some specialties to look forward to, such as galerts (jellied meat) and karbonade (breaded pork chops).

You could be eating yourself into a larger pair of trousers, but fruit compote is definitely worth it. This well-liked dessert will put your taste buds into overdrive just by looking at it.

They say life's not all beer and skittles, but there's definitely nothing wrong with treating yourself to a cold one from time to time. While you're here, make sure it's Uzavas.

Knowing how to say a handful of expressions in the local tongue will make travelling through the Latvia region that little bit less challenging. Try to say 'Mani sauc ...'. It means 'my name is..'. One more to keep in mind is 'Daudz laimes dzimšanas dienā!', meaning 'happy birthday'.

Held each year on the 18th of November, Independence Day occupies an important place in the hearts and minds of the locals. It offers a wonderful opportunity to learn about the country's history and let your hair down while you're at it!

"Visu labu!" doesn't have to mean farewell for good. Why not hang onto a few European euros for your next holiday?

If you're flying back home, it's a good idea to plan your route to the terminal before leaving. From the middle of Straupe, you'll need to go about 75 kilometres southwest to Riga International Airport (RIX), the closest airport.
