Holidays in Somoto

Been struck down with a nasty case of the travel bug? Relax — we've got the perfect cure. Book a trip to Somoto and you'll feel a million bucks in no time!

You can find one of Nicaragua's most important cities a mere day trip from Somoto. Tegucigalpa is 85 kilometres to the northwest.

You don't need to be stuck in a car all day to see some nature. Just 10 kilometres out of Somoto, Canon de Somoto National Monument is a superb place to fill your lungs with fresh air. More scenic surrounds are waiting for you at Reserva Natural Tepesomoto-Pataste, 9 kilometres away.

Interested in the area's religious side? Spend some time at Iglesia Santiago.

Mirador and the Museo Arqueológico Julio César Salgado aren't far from the centre of Pueblo Nuevo, 25 kilometres to the southeast of Somoto. Why not find your way there and have a look?

Whether it's for a bit of shopping or to take in the sights, locals and visitors alike often take the trip to Puertas Azules, 55 kilometres to the southeast. Las Tres Cascadas, Pozo la Pila and Cebollal are close by. Of course, make sure you don't miss out on La Pita and the La Perla either.

Whether you enjoy chasing Michelin stars or chowing down on a simple street snack, sampling the local food and drink is perhaps the best thing about travel. So why not tantalise your taste buds by digging into some of the area's decadent offerings?

If you're browsing a menu, there's a good chance you'll see dishes featuring beans or salad. They're just two ingredients which are typically used in the cooking here.

When Somoto locals talk to you about their food, you're likely to hear vigorón (cabbage salad) or tortillas uttered a few times. These classic dishes are part of the area's identity and should be on any foodie's list.

'Stressed' spelled backwards is 'desserts', and that's not just a coincidence. There's no more scrumptious way to let your worries melt away than with pio quinto (rum-drenched cake), a treat that's often found on dinner tables here.

You can't get the full travelling experience until you've tasted the local brew. Whether you'd like to satisfy your thirst or get some liquid courage to make new friends, ask for Premium.

On the rocks or neat — the barkeeper should know the most delicious way to drink vodka. If your night out demands something with a bigger kick, you can't go past it!

Attempt to knock down that old language barrier by learning to say a few greetings and expressions in the local tongue. You'll gain a more enriching experience and a few new friends while you're at it! You may be glad you learnt '¿Querría bailar conmigo?', which means 'would you like to dance?'. Another one to add to the memory bank is 'Mucho gusto Encantado', which means 'pleased to meet you'.

Food, dancing and music — national celebrations show us the best of what a country has to offer. Be sure to join in on the festivities on Independence Day on the 15th of September.

"Adiós" doesn't have to mean farewell forever. Why not hold onto a few Nicaraguan córdobas for your next holiday?

Are you wondering where the closest airport is? Well, it's El Salvador International Airport (SAL) and you'll find it 260 kilometres west.
