Holidays in Sibu Island

Hey, we hear ya! You're fed up with your boss and you need to get away, right? So why not take some annual leave and journey around the striking forests and jungle of Johor. Just book your flight to Sibu Island and go from there.

The nation's capital, Kuala Lumpur, is located 280 kilometres to the west of Sibu Island.

Search for intricate seashells to start a collection or try to spot small animals like clams and crabs at Changi Beach Park and Pulau Beach. You'll find these appealing shorelines 95 kilometres and 25 kilometres away, respectively.

Head over and see what is waiting to be discovered at Kambau Beach.

Pulau Tinggi is 12 kilometres to the northeast and worth your time. After more ideas? Jemaluang, 25 kilometres to the west of Sibu Island, ought to be your second stop.

Cater to your adventurous side and discover the surrounding landscape with a bit of mountain climbing. Or, maybe you could go hiking?

If you're feeling a bit worn out, take the opportunity to head out into the open and go shore fishing. If you'd prefer something else, sunbathing might be more relaxing.

Why spend precious time planning your itinerary when the hard work can be done by someone else? Guided nature walks and culinary tours make sightseeing simple.

Fancy some fun on the water? Then put on your suntan lotion and try out some swimming or snorkeling.

Our travel schedules are often dependent on the weather forecast, but that isn't the case with everything. Rain, hail or shine, visit the region's history museums and craft workshops whenever you like.

Looking for an outdoor activity that will please the whole family? The surrounding area is home to some wonderful open-air markets.

Acquaint yourself with the area by checking out the surrounding historic palaces. Do your own research into their historical importance or introduce yourself to the most enlightened tour guide you can find.

Whether or not you believe in something bigger than yourself, paying a visit to one or two of the surrounding mosques and temples is a great opportunity to get some insight into the area's spiritual leanings.

'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' George Bernard Shaw once wrote, but add travel to the mix and it's a marriage made in heaven. You're invited to merge your two greatest loves by eating and drinking your way through Johor.

There's no need to agonise over the restaurant menu while in Sibu Island. Just jump straight in and devour the region's signature dishes, such as ikan bakar (grilled seafood) and mee bandung muar (shrimp noodle soup).

Dedicated travellers will often put in some time to learn a couple of words in the local tongue. They've come to realise that being able to interact with the locals isn't just useful, it's great fun too! Firstly, try to pronounce 'Asal dari mana?'. It translates to 'where are you from?'. 'Selamat pagi', which means 'good morning', is also quite common.

If you're planning on going to Sibu Island in August, you'll want to be here on the 31st for Independence Day. There's always plenty of excitement in the air on this national day of celebration.

"Sampai nanti" doesn't need to be so final. Why not put away a few Malaysian ringgits for your return?

With a bit of planning, making your way to Changi Airport (SIN), the closest airport, shouldn't be too difficult. It's around 95 kilometres to the south of downtown Sibu Island.
