If you're headed to Shiiba-son, take note — hotel options in the vicinity are as few and far between as the hair on your great uncle Terry's head!

There's no need to stress out though. Gokase-cho is located approximately 25 kilometres away and has some excellent hotels, including the Ryokan Shinsen and Hotel Greenpia Minami Aso.

Still haven't uncovered the ideal room? You might just find a soft enough thread count in Minamiaso. You'll also be able to have some adventures at Yusui Tunnel Park and Mt. Aso. Minamiaso hotel options are the Hotel Yumeshizuku and Bettei Soan. 60 kilometres to the northwest of Shiiba-son you can also stay at Ozu, home to the Hotel Route-Inn Kumamoto Oozu Ekimae and Hotel Vista Kumamoto Airport. If you're staying in Ozu, set aside some time to check out Sugaruga Falls and Aso Milk Ranch.

You'll come across some great things to see and do in Kumamoto. Kengun Shrine, Kenritsu Library and Aso Hakusui Onsen are our top picks. This regional centre is positioned 60 kilometres northwest of Shiiba-son and has a population of 700,000.
