Holiday In Shanghai

People, people and more people is what Shanghai is all about. Well, not really, but there are a lot of people in this city. Located on the central coast of China, Shanghai is home to a little bit of everything. You’ve no doubt seen pictures of its stunning modern skyline and heard stories about its wild entertainment districts. But a visit here isn’t just exploring and eating (though it can be, if that’s what you’re after)—why not visit peaceful temples or wander through ancient gardens? Does all this sound good? Then check out our Shanghai holiday deals and start practicing how to properly say, “Nin hao!”

Things to Do in Shaghai

The first thing you do on your Shanghai holiday is to check out the City God Temple in the old walled city. Walk the grounds of the temple and let your eyes feast on the many altars, then hang out in the pavilions and enjoy refreshments in the tea houses. The temple connects to the Yu Garden, so make your way over to the green space and channel your inner chi or whatever. The goldfish in the large pond are a little bigger than the ones you get in a plastic bag at your local pet shop, but don’t try to smuggle any home to add to your aquarium.

When your time in the garden is over, head to the Oriental Pearl Tower on the banks of the Huangpu River and face your fear of heights…if you’ve got the guts to do it. Get up to one of the 15 observation levels for spectacular views of the city. Shanghai holidays aren’t complete without a visit to this tower, so bring your camera to make sure you document the view from each floor. Trust us, your social media friends will thank you (well, maybe they won’t).

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

Want to spend your hard-earned yuan on stuff? Go to Nanjing Road, the main shopping street in Shanghai and grab bags full of clothes from a number of internationally known brands. If you don’t care about fashion, use one of lastminute.com.au’s fantastic Shanghai car hire deals and go to the Yuyuan Market to get your hands on silk umbrellas, bamboo walking sticks and Chinese medicine. No, it’s not Advil.

Are you ready for some Chinese comfort food that makes San Francisco’s Chinatown look like an amateur? Start your adventure downtown, skipping from one street food cart to the next. Get an appetiser of crab shell pie, then go for a plate of Chinese-style fried chicken with a side of tofu flower soup. Top it all off with a mung bean pie. Wow, China holidays are delicious.

Ever wondered how the Chinese party? What, mate—haven’t you seen those New Year’s clips on YouTube? That’s right. Make your way to The Bund, where some of the city’s swankiest bars and nightclubs are located. Expats and locals mix it up along this waterfront district until the wee hours. This is the perfect time for you spend the extra money you saved from Shanghai packages, so get moving. There’s also rumoured to be some hidden rooftop watering holes along The Bund, but you’ll have to find those yourself—we promised not to tell.
