Holidays in Rifu

When chucking a sickie becomes way too simple, it's time to take a breather from the corporate cubicle and say hello to Rifu!

The nation's capital city, Tokyo, can be found about 320 kilometres to the south of Rifu.

You don't have to be on the road all day to witness a bit of nature around these parts. Just 35 kilometres out of Rifu, Akiu Otaki Falls is an excellent place to sit back and unwind. More idyllic surrounds are waiting for you at Lake Kamafusa Dam, 30 kilometres away.

Hone your photography skills at Nanakita Park and Nakanoshima Park. You're sure to find some ideal subjects to inspire the artist within!

No soccer supporter will want to miss out on a visit to Sendai Stadium, which is located 10 kilometres away in Sendai. Take a look at the event schedule to see when they're playing. If you miss them, why not catch the venue's other home team, the Sony Sendai FC?

Hang your feet from the chairlift at Zao Hot Springs Ski Resort as you work out your next run. Along with Shichikasyuku Ski Area, this snowy playground offers some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the region.

Tagajo, 5 kilometres to the south, is the home of Kanezaki Sasakama Hall and the Tohoku History Museum. Why not make your way there and check out these wonderful sights? Alternatively, stop at Shiogama, 8 kilometres to the east of Rifu, for the Zuigan-ji Temple and Taga Castle Ruins.

Both travellers and locals often make the journey to Matsushima. This destination is 10 kilometres to the northeast and not too far from Fukuurajima, Matsushima Retoro Kan and the Kyohei Fujita Glass Museum. If you're planning to stay a while, remember to visit the Entsuin Temple and Ojima Island.

Tease your taste buds and fill your Instagram with mouthwatering photos by sampling some of the area's top food and drink offerings. Just make sure you hashtag 'yum'!

Looking for an introduction to the local cuisine? We suggest you get a taste for beef and noodles, two staples used in a range of dishes here.

You don't need to spend all night reading through the menu when you're in Rifu. Dive straight in and sink your teeth into some of the area's signature dishes, such as tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) and jappa-jiru (fish gut and vegetable soup).

Because a life without dessert isn't a life worth living, you should definitely introduce your palate to anpan (sweet roll). This sweet treat tells the story of the area in just one bite.

You can't get the full travelling experience until you've had a sip of the local beer. Whether you'd like to sit back in a quiet corner or get some liquid courage to make new friends, ask for Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen.

On the rocks or neat — the barkeeper ought to know the best way to have junmaishu. When the night calls for something with a bit more bite, it cannot be beaten!

Travelling is more than just posing for photos and trying the local dishes. It's also about experiencing the people and their culture. Get the most out of your Miyagi escape by memorising a few local phrases. Try to get your tongue around 'Gomen nasai'. It translates as 'sorry'. One more common phrase is 'Ohayō gozaimasu' ('good morning').

Don't forget to mark the 23rd of December in your calendar. To the locals, this means one thing — Birthday of Emperor Akihito. A notable day of festivities, this is a marvellous time of year to head to the country.

Like all good things, your trip to Rifu must eventually come to an end. When it's finally time to depart, say one last "Sayōnara" and spend your leftover holiday allowance on some special souvenirs.

From Rifu, it's approximately 290 kilometres south to Narita International Airport (NRT). This is the closest airport. Remember to give yourself enough time to find your way there so you don't miss your flight home.

"For Japanese standards the room is spacious. I tried many other hotels in Japan and American's should probably only use Monterey Hotels which are throughout Japan for the comforts we are used to and reasonably priced.
