Holidays in Reine

When chucking a sickie becomes your new norm, it's time to break free from the nine-to-five and say hello to Reine!

It lies 900 kilometres north of Oslo, the nation's capital.

There's also the Dagmar's Museum of Dolls and Toys. It's a nice place to explore if you find yourself close by.

Want even more things to see and do? Head to Hamnoy, 2 kilometres northeast of Reine, for the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum and the Stockfish Museum. Alternatively, Moskenes is 5 kilometres to the west, and it's here you'll find the Lofoten Tørrfiskmuseum and the Norsk Telemuseum.

Want to go and see the Lofoten War Memorial Museum, The Lofoten Aquarium and the Espolin Gallery? Then head to Kabelvag, 65 kilometres to the northeast. The Lofoten Museum and the Lofotmuseet are also close by and should be included in your travel plans.

An excellent way to see the wider region is to go on an outdoor adventure. Tobogganing is one of the most popular pastimes in these parts. But if that's not quite what you're after, you could always go snowmobiling.

If you're feeling on edge, take the chance to venture outdoors and go cycling. If you had something else in mind, shore fishing might be more to your taste.

Step off dry land and soak up Nordland from a whole new angle. With exhilarating activities like canoeing and sea kayaking to try, it's the ideal playground for water lovers.

If you're looking for some great activities during the winter, go snowboarding or skiing. You'll be so busy living it up, you'll barely even notice the chilly temperatures!

We're not sure how they crammed so much into the region's art museums, nature museums, history museums and art galleries. Step inside and enjoy what they've got to offer.

Are you feeling as though you'd like a bit of fresh air? Think about planning an adventure to one of the surrounding area's open-air exhibits and lighthouses.

If you're eager to get a glimpse into the region's past, why not look around a couple of its old towns? Do a little research beforehand so you don't waste any time.

If you're curious about the local religion, organise a visit to some cathedrals. Even if you're not touched by a spiritual awakening, there's a good chance you'll find a little tranquillity.

To truly experience a place is to immerse yourself in the local food and drink, so get set to chew, chomp, sip and slurp your way through Nordland. The only thing you need to bring with you is a solid appetite!

Are you wondering about a few of the surprises you'll find on your dinner plate? There's a high chance they'll include moose, whale meat or both.

You don't need to spend all night reading through the restaurant menu while in Reine. Get stuck right in and devour the local specialties, such as svinekoteletter (pork chops) and barents ham (whale meat dish).

Krumkake (thin rolled cake filled with cream) is a dessert that sums up this place in a single mouthful. Put in an order for a serving and then come back for seconds!

Prefer something a bit stronger? You have to taste karsk (coffee and vodka). Ask your bar person if it's good in any mixed drinks or cocktails. If that fails, request a shot glass and enjoy it neat!

You're going all the way to Reine, so why not put in a little extra effort to memorise a few expressions and greetings in the local tongue? Trust us, it'll make your whole experience that little bit sweeter. 'Skal vi danse?' means 'would you like to dance?'. Another often used phrase is 'Kvar kjem du frå?' ('where are you from?').

Want to participate in the Constitution Day festivities? Mark the 17th of May in your travel diary and get ready to kick up your heels!

It's always tricky to say "Ha det bra" to Reine, but don't worry, it will still be there next time!

With a bit of planning, getting to Bodo Airport (BOO), the closest airport, shouldn't be too hard. It's some 90 kilometres to the southeast of downtown Reine.
