Extremely Disappointed – Food Poisoning Ruined Our Trip
We traveled to Occidental at Xcaret Destination for a wedding held at Xcaret Park, expecting a beautiful and memorable experience. Unfortunately, our stay was completely overshadowed by a severe case of food poisoning that left my husband seriously ill.
In the early morning hours after dining at the resort’s buffet, he began experiencing extreme symptoms: high fever, severe vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. We had not eaten anywhere else outside the resort during our stay, so it was clear the illness was caused by something served at the buffet. Fortunately, we ate different foods and therefore I did not get sick.
I immediately reported the issue to the front desk and discovered we were not the only ones — several other guests were filing similar complaints at the same time. Disappointingly, the resort took no meaningful action. No follow-up, no concern for guest safety, and certainly no accountability.
The illness forced us to extend our stay unexpectedly, incurring the cost of extra nights and new return flights. Instead of enjoying the wedding festivities and our vacation, we were stuck in our room dealing with a completely preventable situation.
What should have been a joyful and celebratory trip turned into a nightmare. I cannot recommend this resort and strongly urge management to take guest health and food safety far more seriously.
