Holiday In Milwaukee

With world-class breweries, gorgeous lake views and cheese for days, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was cool even before the hipsters thought so.

As one of the biggest cities in the American Midwest, Milwaukee has heaps of quirky traditions—need we explain the New Year’s Day Polar Bear Plunge into Lake Michigan?—and unique museums. Oh, and underneath all that flannel, Milwaukee has a great sense of humour. Just ask the Famous Racing Sausages (we’ll explain later). Book a holiday to Milwaukee and pack a few extra laughs (psst! and room for gouda).

Things to Do in Milwaukee

Milwaukee holidays have a little something for everyone, and we’re not just talking about the great debate between cheddar and colby lovers. Pick up one of our bangin’ Milwaukee car hire options to get around. Start revving your engine at the Harley-Davidson Museum, dedicated to America’s favourite motorcycle. Slow the pace at the Milwaukee Riverwalk, which is gorgeous come rain or shine (or snow). For more contrast, step back in time on the waterfront in the Historic Third Ward, and spend an arvo at the nearby Discovery World—an innovation emporium where you can get your geek on. For science!

Of course, a brewery tour is a must. It’ll help you better appreciate a Milwaukee Brewers game and the team mascots, the Famous Racing Sausages (we said we’d bring that back). If fermented grain and hops aren’t your cup of…beer, then sample the local cheeses. Yes, cheese is an activity in Wisconsin—nothing says “Milwaukee holiday” like a melty masterpiece.

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

To take home some of your favourite labels and a few new designs, turn that history tour of the Third Ward into a shopping spree. You’ll find high-end swag and boutique bling, but if the latter is what you’re really after, go west to Wauwatosa, a neighbourhood that features contemporary vibes and local artists. (BTW, this is a good reason to score some great deals on Milwaukee packages with lastminute.com.au!)

So we’ve already covered the beer, cheese and sausage, but don’t worry about Wisconsin being a three-trick pony when it comes to the culinary scene. Milwaukee’s mix of Native American and French influences, as well as its history of international trade, make it a city of global eats. Just don’t leave without a bowl of beer cheese soup, OK?

If you wanna party Oscar Wilde-style, say good night to a long day in the Brady Street neighbourhood, north of the Third Ward. The Irish playwright visited the area back in 1882, but this district is timeless and the clubs don’t quit. For a glossier finish, continue swaying southward to Bay View, an artsy and young professional ’hood where they make blowing off steam look good.
