It lies 110 kilometres southeast of the country's capital, Managua.

Sitting 100 kilometres to the south, Hermosa Bay Beach is a fabulous spot to spend a few hours scanning the horizon for ships. Santo Domingo Beach also boasts some pleasant scenery. You'll find this inviting shoreline 7 kilometres to the south.

The calming sounds of nature await you at Concepcion Volcano. It sits just 12 kilometres away, so you won't have to be stuck on the road all day. Bolanos Island National Wildlife Refuge, 50 kilometres away, is one more recommended option.

If you're the kind of traveller who loves becoming immersed in the vibe of the area you're visiting, Yamil Rios Stadium is one for your must-do list. Look into what live events are on during your stay and cheer along with enthusiastic local sports fans. You'll find the venue 30 kilometres away in San Juan del Sur.

La Virgen, 25 kilometres to the west, is the home of San Pedro Parish and the Cruz de España. Why not find your way there and go to these outstanding sights? Alternatively, you could head to Rivas, 30 kilometres to the west of Merida, for the Anthropology Museum and Iglesia San Francisco.

Keen to visit Parque Central, Granada Cathedral and Chapel of Maria Auxiliadora? Head along to Granada, 70 kilometres to the northwest, and set up base. These attractions, along with Church of Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes and Los Poetas Park, are all close by.
