Holidays in Manu

City life driving you crazy? Reckon a change of scene would sort you out? Then whisk yourself off to Manu and take it easy among the beautiful rainforest and rivers of Madre de Dios.

The nation's capital, Lima, can be found 640 kilometres to the west of Manu.

Parque Nacional Manu, 25 kilometres away, is the place you'll want to go if you're craving some fresh air and some time in Mother Nature. It's definitely worth the drive.

The nearby destinations of Pillcopata and Las Cruces are worth having a look at. They're located 65 kilometres south and 85 kilometres southwest away, respectively. Jump in the car and find out what they're all about!

Satisfy your inner adventurer and check out the local landscape with a day of mountain biking. Alternatively, perhaps you'd rather go hiking?

Looking for something for the whole family? Shore fishing and bird watching are two enjoyable ways to spend an hour or two.

Confused about what to see and do first? Often the best way to see a place is to sign on for a tour. The region boasts terrific guided nature walks and wildlife spotting tours.

Looking for some fun on the water? Then lather on the sunscreen and take your inner aqua-lover rafting or canoeing.

Are you feeling as though you'd like to spend the day outdoors? Organise an adventure to one of the surrounding area's open-air markets.

Madre de Dios has an intriguing past. Spend at least a day exploring some of the surrounding traditional villages and archeological sites. Don't stress if you can't find much information online — the locals will no doubt have a few stories to share!

Your eyes shouldn't get to have all the fun while visiting Madre de Dios. Give your taste buds a little TLC too by trying out some of the local food and drink. After all, you can't say you've truly experienced a place until you've tasted its flavours.

Want some insight into the regional cuisine? We suggest getting a taste for camu camu (Peruvian fruit) and chicken, two common ingredients used in dishes here.

Don't miss your chance to dig into a plate of patarashca (grilled fish) or ceviche (raw fish in lime juice). These distinctive meals are highly recommended by the locals.

Still have a bit of give in your waistband after dinner? Then place an order for mazamorra morada and arroz con leche (purple corn custard and sweetened milk), an indulgent dessert.

To beer or not to beer? That is the question. Of course, the answer is always beer. When you're in this corner of the world, Arequipeña is the one you need.

Want to add some zing to your evening? A few shots of Chicha de Jora (fermented corn-based alcoholic drink) should do it! On ice, neat, in a cocktail — drink it whichever way you want!

Experienced travellers usually put in some effort to memorise a few expressions in the local tongue. You'll find that being able to communicate with the local people isn't just useful, it's a lot of fun! '¡Buena suerte!' translates as 'good luck'. 'Buenos días' ('good morning') is one more you might need.

Planning to be here on the 28th of July? Luck is on your side. On this date, the whole nation joins together for Independence Day.

Before you pack up and wave "Adiós", why not spend the last bits of your holiday allowance and treat yourself to some souvenirs of Manu?

Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ), the nearest airport, is just 150 kilometres to the southwest from the middle of Manu. Map out a route, pack up your suitcase and set an alarm clock — and be sure not to hit the snooze button too many times!
