There's no need to worry though. Hwasun is around 25 kilometres away and boasts some brilliant places to crash, including the Ramada Plaza Gwangju and Kumho Hwasun Resort.

Always on the hunt for your next big adventure? The wider South Jeolla region has some brilliant things to check out as well. Don't even think of heading home without stopping at a few of the region's incredible beaches, coastal plains and rivers. Castles are popular sights also worth a look around. If the weather is nice (or even if it's not), you could also get out there and have a crack at some popular local pastimes like mountain climbing and hiking.

Looking for more to do? Spend the day discovering the Chosun University Museum of Art and May 18 Democracy Square. You'll find them in Gwangju, 50 kilometres to the northwest of Malmae. The Holiday Inn Gwangju and Pedro's House - Hostel are some of the short and long-stay options here. Or, you could stay in Mokpo, 65 kilometres to the west of Malmae, where you'll find the Sunshine Motel and Fontana Beach Hotel. Clean rooms. Very friendly owner. Bit painful on the back if you are not used to sleeping without a mattress but I guess that is part of the hanok experience. Toiletries and basic kitchen needs available. Limited transport and dining around the area. Cannot figure out the opening times of the restaurants as well. It says open in Google, Naver and signage on the doors, but is actually closed. Still happy with our stay though. Happy to experience what living in a hanok is like. Just make sure to organise transport and pre-plan all your activities if wanting to stay here as it is quite far from the Suncheon city center.
