Holidays in Labis

When you see seriously spectacular landscapes plastered all over the telly, it's hard not to get a bad case of FOMO. So why not spoil yourself with a getaway in Labis and experience the postcard-perfect forests of Johor?

It sits 170 kilometres to the southeast of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.

Head out into the fresh air and appreciate the natural surrounds of Gunung Ledang Johor National Park. It lies 45 kilometres away from Labis. You can also experience a bit of peace and quiet at Endau-Rompin National Park, 25 kilometres away.

We also suggest jumping in a car and finding your way to Segamat. It's about 25 kilometres to the northwest and the home of Rock Garden and Dataran Sagamat.

If you're after something more adventurous, you could check out the region's mountain climbing options. Or perhaps hiking is more your thing? Whatever you choose, you're certain to have a fun time.

If you're feeling a bit worn out, take the chance to try shore fishing. If it's not really your thing, sunbathing might be more to your taste.

Sure, we admit there's a charm to getting lost in an unfamiliar place, but sometimes you just want to reach your target on the first go. To avoid any bumps along the way, think about doing some guided nature walks and culinary tours.

From swimming to snorkeling, there are many ways to get out on the water in Johor. Just don't forget to bring your sun cream!

The region's history museums and craft workshops offer something for people of all ages. Take a look inside and see what's happening.

We'd be hard-pressed to think of a more engaging way to discover the local area than by seeing its open-air markets.

If you want to find out more about the area's past, visit the nearby historic palaces. Consult your guidebook, do some research and see the best of them.

Experience the area in a more spiritual way by visiting its mosques and temples. Take a bit of time for your own quiet contemplation or simply observe the locals in prayer.

To really experience a place is to immerse yourself in the local food and drink, so get set to crunch, munch, slurp and sip your way through Johor. The only thing you need to take with you is a hearty appetite!

Are you on the hunt for a distinctive Labis dining experience? There are some signature dishes to watch out for, such as ikan bakar (grilled seafood) and mee bandung muar (shrimp noodle soup).

Ask any seasoned traveller and they'll tell you that the easiest way to get the most out of your travel experience is to memorise a handful of the local words and phrases. Try to get your lips around 'Selamat petang'. It translates as 'good evening'. 'Nama saya ...' ('I am from..') is one more you may need.

Celebrated throughout the entire country, Independence Day occurs on the 31st of August. If you're fortunate enough to be here on this important day, it'll be hard not to get swept up in the exciting atmosphere!

"Sampai jumpa lagi" doesn't have to mean farewell for good. Why not put away a few Malaysian ringgits for your return?

With some planning, making it to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), the nearest airport, shouldn't be too difficult. It's some 150 kilometres west of downtown Labis.
