Holidays in Kuntanse

Been up 'til dawn way too often lately? Dying for a break and a few early nights? Kuntanse might just be the answer. It's set among the coastal plains and rainforest of Ghana — nice and not too touristy. (We reckon you'll feel so relaxed, you'll be under the covers by sunset!)

It lies 170 kilometres to the northwest of the nation's capital, Accra.

Get set for some captivating soccer action at Kumasi Sports Stadium in Kumasi, 25 kilometres away. Don't forget to encourage home team the Asante Kotoko Sporting Club by slipping into a few pieces of red and white!

If you're considering travelling further afield, go 20 kilometres north to Ejisu. This is where you'll find the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and Mardot Shopping Center. We also suggest stopping by Kumasi, 25 kilometres to the northwest, for Manhyia Palace and Kejetia Market.

You certainly won't need to bring that heavy guidebook if you join some wildlife spotting tours and wildlife safaris. Your trusty tour guide will give you the most informed local knowledge available!

We'd be hard-pressed to think of a more pleasant way to explore the local area than by taking in its open-air markets.

Get to know the area's secrets by exploring the nearby fortresses. If a tour guide isn't around, make sure you do some of your own research.

To truly experience a place is to immerse yourself in its food and drink, so get set to gnaw, nibble, sip and swig your way across Ghana. The only thing you need to take with you is a hearty appetite!

Want to know about a few of the things that'll land on your dinner plate? There's a chance they'll include millet, sorghum or both.

No proud foodie would visit Kuntanse without trying a few of the specialty dishes, such as red red (bean curry) and banku (fermented corn and meat).

You're unlikely to need too much persuading to order some fried plantains, a dessert that'll make you want to sever all ties and move here.

Don't forget to mark the 6th of March in your calendar. To the locals, this means one thing — Independence Day. A prominent day of festivities, this is a terrific time of year to visit the country.

Metal detectors, long lines and even longer walks to the boarding gate. Airports can be very taxing. Give yourself plenty of time to find Kotoka International Airport (ACC). Situated 180 kilometres to the southeast, this is the nearest terminal.
