Holidays in Kliskova

Been up 'til dawn way too often lately? Dying for a break and a few early nights? Kliskova might just be the answer. It sits among the forests and rivers of Latvia — nice and not too touristy. (We reckon you'll feel so relaxed, you'll be under the doona by sunset!)

It lies 190 kilometres southeast of the capital of Latvia, Riga.

The peaceful sounds of the natural world are waiting for you at Razna National Park. It sits just 35 kilometres away, so you don't have to be stuck on the road all day. Devil's Lake, 14 kilometres away, is another popular option.

After some other nearby localities? Aglona is about 13 kilometres to the southeast, so get in the car and start exploring! Alternatively, Preiļi, 14 kilometres northwest of Kliskova, is also worth the time.

Rezekne, 40 kilometres to the northeast, may be worthy of a day trip. You can use it as a base when swinging by Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral, the Embassy of Latgale GORS and Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church. If you'd like more convincing, other nearby sights include Orthodox Church of the Birth of Holy Jesus’ Mother and the Monument “United for Latvia”.

From kite surfing to wind surfing, there's a range of ways to get out on the water in Latvia. Just don't forget to bring your sun cream!

Explore the region's history museums and mansions. They are especially good places to shelter in when the rain starts pelting down.

If you ask residents about activities in the surrounding area, they'll likely point you towards the intriguing open-air museums.

If you'd love to delve into the region's past, why not check out several of its castles and historic mansions? It pays to do a little research beforehand so you don't waste any time.

Searching for some peace of mind? You'll likely find what you're seeking at Kliskova's churches and cathedrals.

'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' George Bernard Shaw once said, but throw travel into the mix and it's a match made in heaven. You're invited to merge your two greatest loves by eating and drinking your way through Latvia.

Curious about some of the typical ingredients used in cooking here? Prepare to be served potato and egg in many of your meals.

During your time in Kliskova, dine like the locals do. That means digging into a meal of galerts (jellied meat) or karbonade (breaded pork chops), two of the area's specialties.

A meal is never truly complete without dessert, so forget about counting calories and savour one of the most lip-smacking sweet treats, fruit compote.

For lovers of a decent pint, get cosy at a nearby bar and request Uzavas. It's best enjoyed with a side of joke-cracking and socialising with the locals.

Learning even just a handful of words in the local tongue will make your trip through the Latvia region that little bit easier. You may be glad you learnt 'Cik tas maksā?', which means 'how much is this?'. Another common phrase is 'Kā tevi sauc?' ('what's your name?').

Be sure to mark the 18th of November in your schedule. To the locals, this means just one thing — Independence Day. An important day of celebrations, this is a marvellous time to check out the country.

You may be poor in European euros when your trip comes to an end, but you'll be rich in incredible experiences. "Uz redzēšanos" Kliskova!

From the centre of Kliskova, it's 200 kilometres to the northwest to Riga International Airport (RIX). This is the nearest airport. Remember to give yourself extra time to make your way there so you don't miss your flight home.
