Holidays in Katalonia
As all travellers know — a life full of surprises and adventure is a life well-lived. So dig out your passport, pack your gear and say hello to Katalonia!
The nation's capital city, Athens, sits around 290 kilometres to the southeast of Katalonia.
Spend at least a few hours enjoying the cool ocean breeze at Kalithea Beach or Leptokarya Beach.
Mount Olympus, 30 kilometres away, is one of the best places to go if you're after some fresh air and some time out in nature. It's definitely worth the drive.
Catch the chairlift at Elatohori Ski Center, soak up the sweeping vistas and then ski your way back to base. For even more thrills, spend time on the slopes at National Snow Center Vasilitsas.
If you're thinking about travelling further afield, go 15 kilometres northeast to Pydna-Kolindros. It's here you'll discover Church of Saint Minas and Saint Andrew Cathedral. We also recommend heading to Veroia, 25 kilometres to the northwest, for Church of the Resurrection of Christ and the Byzantine Museum of Veroia.
Do a little shopping and see some sights in Thessaloniki. This destination is 60 kilometres away and quite close to the Archaeological Museum, White Tower of Thessaloniki and the Arch of Galerius. That said, don't forget about Saint Demetrios Church and Aristotelous Square either.
'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' George Bernard Shaw once wrote, but add travel to the mix and it's a match made in heaven. You're invited to unite your two loves by eating and drinking your way across Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
This area has its own cooking style based on local ingredients. Chicken and wheat are commonly used in many of the dishes.
Ask one of the locals what to eat in Katalonia and iskender kebap (lamb with yogurt on pita bread) will likely be the first thing they mention. Moussaka (minced meat and aubergine casserole) is another local classic you should try.
If you're all about dessert, you're not going to be disappointed. Be sure to try tavuk göÄŸüsü (milk pudding), a tempting treat that's guaranteed to hit your sweet spot.
It can be a challenge to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to quality beers, but one brew worth trying is Neda. Grab a glass and bottoms up!
Watch out for Savatiano Retsina and chardonnay on the wine lists. They're popular local specialities for both vino savants and novices alike.
With just a little bit of your holiday allowance remaining in your pocket and some amazing memories that will last a lifetime, say a final "Yiá sou" to Katalonia.
The nearest terminal is Macedonia Airport (SKG). When it's time to pack your bag and hit the skies, travel 55 kilometres to the east.
Top hotels for your Katalonia holiday

AIGES MELATHRON
Please ignore the reviews that this place is a little bit worn down. Yes it looks like something from Las Vegas in the 1980s. But, I'm still giving it five stars because the staff is absolutely amazing, I've traveled all over Greece the last two months and most hotels are terrible and hospitality ...

Olympus Mediterranean
Was a great hotel! Litochoro is a quaint town and this hotel elevated our trip :) the staff was delightful, and the auro of the hotel was very wholesome. The free breakfast was decent, and the pool and sauna were lovely.

Mediterranean Village Hotel & Spa
I stayed here for 7 nights in June. The hotel was beautiful, the staff is wonderful, and the cleanliness was top notch. I enjoyed the breakfast buffet in the morning sitting by the pool and beach. Highly recommend this place to all traveling to Katerini.
