It's situated 860 kilometres to the north of Tokyo, the nation's capital.

You won't need to travel too far to enjoy some wonderful natural sights. Jump in the car and head to Lake Shinotsu, 25 kilometres away from Ikushumbetsu, for a chilled-out day. Or maybe Katsurazawa Lake is more to your taste? It's situated just 6 kilometres away.

A stop at the Mikasa City Museum will teach you a lot about the local culture and the people who reside here.

If you're the sort of traveller who loves experiencing the true local vibe of the area you're visiting, Sapporo Community Dome is one for your must-see list. Check what live games are on while you're here and roar along with passionate local sports fans. You'll find the arena 50 kilometres away in Retsureppu.

Once you've picked up your ski pass at Furano Ski Resort, you won't want to waste a moment making your way to the top of the mountain! You might also like to jump aboard the chairlift and carve up the pistes at Kokusai Ski Resort.

Expand your horizons and find out what's going on in Iwamizawa, 15 kilometres to the southwest. Many travellers come here for the Iwamizawa Park and Hokkaido Greenland. Alternatively, Naie is 18 kilometres to the north of Ikushumbetsu. Swing by this destination for access to Tomei Park and Tsurunuma Road Station.

Whether it's for some shopping or to see the sights, visitors often make their way to Otaru, 80 kilometres to the west. Tomioka Catholic Church, the Otaru Music Box Museum and Suitengu are all within a stone's throw.
