Holidays in Golets

Yep. Wanderlust — it gets right into your soul. So, isn't it high time you thought of your next adventure? Golets awaits!

It's located 110 kilometres east of Sofia, the country's capital.

If your getaway happens to coincide with a huge dump of snow, you'll see many local powder hounds loading up their cars for some chilled thrills and spills at Uzana Ski Resort.

How do you like the sound of The Covered Bridge and the Vasil Levski Museum? These awesome attractions are in Hlevene, located just 10 kilometres east of Golets. Or perhaps Hisar Fortress and the Ethnographical Museum appeal more to you? To see them, head to Lovech, 14 kilometres northeast.

About 40 kilometres to the north, Pleven is a place with lots to offer. The Pleven Panorama, the Pleven Regional Historical Museum and Vazrazhdane Square are all quite close. Keep in mind, the Pleven Epopee 1877 and Galaxy Bowling Club Pleven may be more your style.

You won't find a better way to explore the local landscapes than on a captivating adventure. Join in on some snowmobiling or ice skating and get your blood pumping!

Sunbathing and bird watching are wonderful ways to give yourself some time out and get some fresh air.

Why spend precious time trying to figure out what to do with your day when the hard work can be left up to someone else? City walking tours and winery tours take the difficulty out of travel.

Keen for some fun on the water? Then lather on your suntan lotion and have a go at some swimming or canoeing.

Celebrate the winter by taking your youngest travellers snowboarding. Skiing is another activity the whole family can try.

Walk through the doors of the region's history museums and enjoy all that they have to offer.

Put on some comfortable clothes and head out to one of the surrounding area's popular outdoor attractions. Its street art are waiting to be explored.

If you're fascinated by history, take the time to wander around the region's ruins, old towns and fortresses. Do some research before you go or make friends with the nearest tour guide.

If you'd like to learn a bit about the local faith, make your way to one or two churches, cathedrals and monasteries. Even if you don't experience a spiritual awakening, it's likely that you'll find a little tranquillity.

'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' George Bernard Shaw once wrote, but throw travel into the mix and it's a marriage made in heaven. You're invited to unite your two loves by eating and drinking your way around Bulgaria.

Once you sit down and skim through a café or restaurant menu, you'll realise that kiselo mlyako (yoghurt) and kashkaval (yellow cheese) are two ingredients commonly used in local cooking.

When the locals talk to you about their food, you might hear shkembe chorba (tripe soup) or tarator (cold soup) mentioned once or twice. These specialty dishes form part of the region's identity and ought to be on any foodie's must-eat list.

Dinner isn't complete without dessert, so give up counting calories and tuck into one of the most well-known after-dinner treats, mliako s oriz (rice pudding).

Good news, beer lovers. There are some flavoursome bews to wrap your hands around here. Enjoy a glass or three of zagorka and don't forget to text your pals back at home, 'Wish you were beer'.

Travelling is more than just taking photos and trying out local cuisine. It's also about interacting with the people and their culture. Get the most out of your Bulgaria escape by learning a couple of words in the local tongue. 'Ne razbiram' means 'I don't understand'. 'Čestit rožden den', which means 'happy birthday', is also quite common.

Planning to be here around the 3rd of March? What good luck. On this date, the nation bands together to celebrate Liberation Day.

Luckily Golets isn't going anywhere, so this "Shte se vidim po-kŭsno" doesn't need to be your last!

Flying out? Map a route, pack up your bag and set an alarm. The nearest airport, Sofia Airport (SOF), is just 100 kilometres to the southwest.
