Holidays in El Cacalote

If 'samey' is how you'd describe your life right now, then you could definitely use an adventure! Why not book a ticket to El Cacalote and immerse yourself in the awesome beaches, coastal plains and rivers of Oaxaca?

It's located 430 kilometres to the southeast of Mexico City, the capital city of Mexico.

Spend a day listening to the sound of the waves and picking up perfect seashells at Zipolite Beach or Playa Roca Blanca.

If you've got ample time, why not check out some close-by places? Rio Grande and Santos Reyes Nopala are 11 kilometres and 25 kilometres away, respectively.

Located 90 kilometres to the east, Mazunte is a place with something for everyone. Camarones Beach, Mermejita Beach and Rinconcito Beach are close by. That said, Ventanilla Beach and Mazunte Beach are also worthy.

Mountain climbing and hiking are very popular with the locals. These outdoor pastimes will allow you to experience this wonderful region from a completely different viewpoint.

A couple of hours in the great outdoors can quieten the mind. If you're feeling a bit worn out, why not unwind by going picnicking or sunbathing?

Let someone else handle all the planning as you make new friends on guided nature walks and city walking tours.

Whether you're plunging into it, floating on it or skimming along its surface, nothing beats being next to the water. You can try your hand at a few watersports here, such as swimming and snorkeling.

Take a look at what's going on at the region's art museums, history museums and craft workshops. There are a few to select from, so it's well worth doing some research!

When the weather is right, head outdoors to explore the surrounding area's open-air exhibits and open-air markets.

Journey back into the past with an outing to some ruins, traditional villages and old towns. When it comes to understanding the historical significance of these structures, an expert tour guide can offer some deeper insight.

Whether or not you follow a faith, stopping at one or two of the surrounding churches, cathedrals, temples and monasteries is a terrific opportunity to get some insight into the area's spirituality.

'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' according to George Bernard Shaw, but throw travel into the mix and it's a marriage made in heaven. You're invited to combine your two loves by eating and drinking your way around Oaxaca.

There's always a local recipe or two you absolutely have to try, and when you're in El Cacalote, tlayudas (giant tortilla with beans, cheese, avocado and tomato) is certainly among them. Empapelado (steamed fish) is another much-loved dish that's an essential experience for food fans.

Oaxaca chocolate is a dessert that sums up this place in a single bite. Put in an order for a serving and see how long it takes until you're back for more!

Make the most of your time in the air by memorising a handful of expressions in the local tongue. Try to pronounce '¡Cuánto tiempo!'. It translates as 'long time no see'. Perhaps you'll find '¡Hola!' easier to get your head around? It means 'hello'.

Be sure to put the 16th of September in your calendar. In El Cacalote this means just one thing — Independence Day. A major day of celebrations, this is a terrific time of year to travel to the country.

It's always a shame to say "Adiós" to El Cacalote, but you can always come back!

If you'll be travelling by air, you'll likely go through General Juan N. Alvarez International Airport (ACA). It's 270 kilometres to the west. Pack up your bag, find a convenient route and set that alarm clock!
