If the Chrissie money you got last year is burning a hole in your pocket, why not spend it on a break in Ego? We promise — it'll be a gift that keeps on giving!

Japan's capital city, Tokyo, is situated roughly 820 kilometres to the east of Ego.

Go for a relaxing walk and feel the cool sea breeze on your face at Momochi Beach or Iwaya Beach.

Inhale some fresh air and contemplate the natural surroundings of Hiraodai. It's located 35 kilometres away from Ego. You can also experience more peace and quiet at Sugao No Taki Waterfall, 35 kilometres away.

If you can't imagine a getaway that doesn't involve some live sports, check what events are scheduled at Global Arena. It's likely something will be on while you visit. You can locate the venue 45 kilometres away in Munakata.

Are you into swinging by Road Station Kikugawa and Kawatana Onsen? They're near the middle of Shimonoseki, 9 kilometres to the north. Alternatively, travel to Sanyoonoda. It's 20 kilometres to the east of Ego and regarded for Ryuozan Park and Ejio Park.

Dazaifu, 75 kilometres to the southwest, is a great little excursion You can use it as a base when stopping by the Kyushu National Museum, Dazaifu Tenmangu and the Komyozenji Temple. If you're still not convinced, other nearby attractions include the Kanzeonji Temple and Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.

Bank cards? Check. ID? Check. But have you packed your appetite? With some fantastic food and drink to indulge in around this region, it's the one thing you won't want to leave home without.

Looking for an introduction to the local cuisine? We recommend trying beef and noodles, two traditional ingredients which make up some of the dishes here.

Don't pass up the opportunity to dig into tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) or hako-zushi (square sushi). These well-loved dishes are highly recommended by the locals.

A meal is never truly complete without dessert, so forget about counting calories for a while and savour one of the most popular sweet treats, anpan (sweet roll).

If you've built up a thirst and want to indulge in a glass of amber nectar, we recommend Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen. Visit during happy hour, make some new pals and bottoms up!

Ever heard of junmaishu? It's one of the most delicious ways to get the night going in Yamaguchi. Have a try and then enjoy a couple of shots!

Don't let the language barrier put you off! Make your adventure to Yamaguchi a more fulfilling one by putting in the effort to learn a couple of phrases in the local tongue. You'll be glad you learnt 'Kanpai', which is how you say 'cheers/good health!'. Another common phrase is 'Gokoūn o inorimasu' ('good luck').

Don't forget to pencil the 23rd of December in your diary. To the locals, this means one thing — Birthday of Emperor Akihito. A major day of festivities, this is a terrific time of year to head to the country.

Before you say "後でお会いしましょう (Atode o ai shimashou)" to Ego, check to see if you have any remaining change that you can spend on some last-minute souvenirs.

If you're flying in and out, you'll likely go through Fukuoka Airport (FUK). It's 70 kilometres to the southwest. Pack your suitcases, plan a convenient route and set your alarm clock!
