Accommodation In Sarawak
Looking for somewhere for your next intrepid adventure? Visit Sarawak, Malaysia’s biggest state and home in the past to the fearsome headhunting tribes. It is located on the large island of Borneo, one of only two places where you can see orang-utans in the wild. Combining lush rainforests, beautiful beaches, fascinating culture, and heaps of activities, it certainly offers plenty of different experiences. Take a peek at our excellent Sarawak hotels and bag yourself a bargain. Go on – what are you waiting for?
HistoryHome to different indigenous tribes, it was an unlikely set of events that saw an English explorer being made the Rajah of Sarawak! James Brooke, often referred to as the White Rajah, did lots of work to promote peace in the area and stop the different tribal groups from being at war with each other. His legacy continued for 100 years, but the third white Rajah left when Borneo was invaded by Japanese forces. Sarawak became a British colony in 1946 and later became part of the Federation of Malaysia. It is a culturally and ethnically diverse place today, with many reminders of the state’s incredible past.
Things to doThe dense jungle and mountainous interior is edged with a beautiful coastline. Adventurers will love the various national parks all around the state, and a trip into the jungles will reveal lots of unusual flora and fauna as well as tumbling waterfalls, sparkling lakes, dark caves, and interesting rock formations. Look out for the unique proboscis monkey with its long nose – native to Borneo it really is a strange sight!
You might also see the biggest flower in the world – the Rafflesia. Some favourite national parks include Bako, Gunung Gadang, Gunung Mulu, Bukit Lambir, and Tanjung Datu. Get up close and personal with man’s orange cousins at Semengoh orang-utan sanctuary and head to the coast for some lovely beach-bumming days. Experience more of the local culture and traditions with visits to various villages and communities. The Sarawak Cultural Village is a top spot to learn all about several groups in one place. You can even spend the night in a traditional longhouse and have a tribal tattoo!
Spend some time in the cities too for a different view of the state.
Shopping and diningThe cuisine in Sarawak is a wonderfully tasty blend of many different influences. Try indigenous fare like Manok Pansoh, Midin, Linut, and Umai. Chinese, Malay, and Indian favourites are widely available, and there are some international restaurants too in the main cities. You can pick some splendid handicrafts and tribal souvenirs, especially excellent wood carvings, rattan baskets, and woven textiles.
Getting here and aroundIf Sarawak sounds like your cup of tea don’t delay – get your Sarawak accommodation sorted and a cheap flight to Kuching, the capital, or a cheap flight to Miri booked, pack your bags, and off you go!
