Holidays in Bata-ata

Been struck down with a nasty case of the travel bug? Don't worry — we've got the cure. Book a trip to Bata-ata and you'll be feeling a hundred percent in no time!

If you journey 140 kilometres of Bata-ata, you'll come across the well-known city of Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte.

Does chilling out on the shore tickle your fancy? Find time to go to Unawatuna Beach or Dickwella Beach.

Head out into the fresh air and immerse yourself in the natural surroundings of Uda Walawe National Park. It's situated 40 kilometres away from Bata-ata. You'll also find a bit of peace and quiet at Ereporu Ganga Waterfalls, 45 kilometres away.

There's even more to see and do just down the road. Ranna, 6 kilometres to the southwest, is known for Rekawa Turtle Conservation Project and Kalamatiya Bird Sanctuary. Alternatively, if Tangalle Lighthouse and Parewella Natural Swimming Area are more your thing, head 16 kilometres southwest from Bata-ata to Tangalle.

Feel like checking out Galle Fort, the National Maritime Museum and the Galle National Museum? Get moving to Galle, 75 kilometres to the west, and set up camp. These attractions, as well as Historical Mansion and Dutch Reformed Church, are all close by.

If you're feeling a bit tense, take the chance to head into the great outdoors and go cycling. If that's not what you had in mind, beach combing might suit you better.

Overwhelmed by sights and activities? Sometimes the best way to experience a place is with a tour or two. The region offers enlightening guided nature walks, wildlife spotting tours, cycling tours and culinary tours.

Into spending time by the water? Add some excitement to your getaway with some swimming or snorkeling.

If you find yourself caught in nasty weather, head for cover in one of the region's history museums and art galleries.

For something outside that everyone is sure to love, drop by the local area's open-air markets.

If you enjoy learning about history, you'll be excited to hear that there are a number of ruins, traditional villages, old towns and fortresses in the surrounding area. Take a step back in time and discover the region's long, rich history.

You don't need to believe in a greater power to appreciate Bata-ata's temples, shrines and monasteries. Learn more about the local faith and find some calm while you're at it.

Ready to chew, chomp, gnaw, nibble and guzzle your way around Sri Lanka? A world of tantalising flavours awaits you here, so put on your stretchiest slacks and bon appétit!

Do you enjoy chicken? What about beef? Whether you're wild about them or not, they are two key ingredients often found in the cooking here.

When Bata-ata locals talk to you about their favourite food, it's likely you'll hear kiribath with onion samba (milk rice) or vegetarian kottu (stir fried mix) uttered a few times. These specialties are part of the region's identity and ought to be on any foodie's list.

'Stressed' spelled backwards is 'desserts', and we don't believe in coincidences. There's no more delightful way to let your cares melt away than with king coconut, a sweet treat that's often found on dinner tables here.

Don't forget to put the 4th of February in your schedule. To the locals, this means just one thing — Independence Day. A major day of festivities, this is a wonderful time of year to be in the country.

Metal detectors, long lines and even longer walks to the boarding gate. Airports can be exhausting. Give yourself enough time to head to Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI). Situated 30 kilometres to the northeast, it's the closest terminal.
