Holidays in Ban Hong
When you see seriously stunning landscapes plastered all over the telly, it's hard not to suffer from FOMO. So why not spoil yourself with a trip to Ban Hong and experience the postcard-perfect rural landscapes of Chiang Mai?
From Ban Hong, travel around 55 kilometres north and arrive in the renowned city of Chiang Mai Province.
Break out on an adventure to some surrounding natural sights. 45 kilometres out of Ban Hong, Doi Inthanon National Park is just waiting to be experienced. Mae Ya Waterfall, 25 kilometres away, is another brilliant place to relax in the outdoors.
If you have loads of time, why not go to a few close-by destinations? Wiang Nong Long and Mae Tha are 12 kilometres and 30 kilometres away, respectively.
An invigorating way to experience the surrounding area is to go on an outdoor adventure. Mountain biking is one of the most popular pastimes here. But if that's not quite what you're after, there's always mountain climbing.
If you're feeling a little on edge, take the chance to spend time out in the open and go bird watching. If that's not what you had in mind, wildlife watching might suit you better.
Set off on a journey of discovery with a helpful tour guide and a group of like-minded travellers. Guided nature walks, wildlife spotting tours and culinary tours are all available in this area.
If you want to get outside and get wet, why not plunge into one or two watersports like rafting or canoeing? All you're going to need is some sunblock and a sense of adventure.
Walk through the region's craft workshops. They are particularly good places to shelter in when the rain starts coming down.
If you get some nice weather, why don't you spend the day at the surrounding area's open-air markets?
If you're a history lover, you'll be delighted to know that there are a number of ruins and traditional villages in this area. Take a step back in time and discover the region's fascinating past.
If you're seeking an experience beyond the material world, consider swinging by one or two temples, shrines and monasteries. It's a fine opportunity to learn a little about Ban Hong's beliefs.
There's a world of unique flavours waiting to say hello to your taste buds in Chiang Mai. With plenty of mouthwatering things to nibble on, all you need to bring with you is a robust appetite — and perhaps your stretchiest jeans.
A typical ingredient in the cuisine here is vietnamese coriander. Another is culantro. They're worth getting a taste for if they're not a part of your food repertoire already.
There's no need to agonise over the menu while in Ban Hong. Just jump straight in and try some of the region's signature dishes, such as khao kan chin (steamed pork blood and rice) and sai oua (grilled herb sausage).
There's more to travelling than just seeing the sights and trying the local cuisine. It's also about the interactions with the people and their culture. Make the most of your Chiang Mai getaway by memorising a couple of expressions and greetings in the local tongue. 'Kòp kun man' is how they say 'thank you'. Maybe you'll find 'Taan hâi a-ròi' is a bit easier to roll off the tongue? It means 'enjoy your meal'.
Don't forget to pencil the 5th of December in your calendar. In Ban Hong this means one thing — Birthday of King Phumiphon. A significant day of festivities, this is a wonderful time to visit the country.
Before you say "Laa gòn ná" to Ban Hong, check to see if you have any remaining change that you can spend on last-minute souvenirs.
Ready to take to the skies? Choose a route, pack your bag and set your alarm clock. The nearest airport, Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX), is some 50 kilometres to the north.
