Holidays in Amanab

Yep. Papua New Guinea is kinda off the beaten track. But let's be honest, who wants to follow the tourist path anyway? Besides, there's plenty to explore in this amazing region (not least of all its unmissable rural landscapes, beaches and coastal plains). Base yourself in Amanab and you can take it from there.

It's situated 930 kilometres northwest of the capital of Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby.

The close-by destinations of Itokama and Imonda are worth your time. They're located 30 kilometres northeast and 30 kilometres north away, respectively. Jump in the car and see what they're all about!

When the time comes to tap into the adventurer within, sign yourself up for some mountain climbing. That said, there aren't many better ways to discover the local region than with a bit of hiking.

Setting your own schedule puts you 100 percent in control, but every so often it's a welcome relief to let somebody else take the reins. Guided nature walks and wildlife spotting tours provide an easy and enjoyable way to see the region.

From swimming to snorkeling, there's a range of ways to get your hair wet in Papua New Guinea. Just don't forget your sun cream!

Make your way through the region's craft workshops. They are particularly good places to visit when the weather turns nasty.

If the weather is good, pack up the kids and head outside to investigate the surrounding area's open-air markets.

The area has an interesting history. Spend a little time checking out some of the surrounding war relics and monuments. Don't stress if you're struggling to find information available online — the locals are sure to have some tales to tell!

There's a whole new world of amazing flavours waiting to meet your taste buds in Papua New Guinea. With plenty of delectable things to gorge on, all you need to bring with you is a hearty appetite — and perhaps a pair of stretchy jeans.

Once you sit down and scan a restaurant or café menu, you'll notice that breadfruit (ulu) and coconuts are a few ingredients commonly used in local cooking.

Ask one of the locals what they recommend eating and chicken pot will likely be up there with the first things they mention. Kokoda fish is another local classic you might like to bite into.

Saksak (dumplings made with sugar and sago) is a dessert that sums up this place in a single bite. Order a serving and then come back for more!

There's bound to be an air of fever and excitement leading up to the 16th of September. The locals will be getting ready for Independence Day, a day of national celebrations.

Having a hard time bidding farewell? Don't worry. This stunning region will always be here awaiting your return.

If you're flying back home, it's probably wise to plan your route to the terminal in advance. From the middle of Amanab, you'll need to go some 100 kilometres north to Vanimo Airport (VAI), the closest airport.
