Holidays in Alis

Life in the city driving you crazy? Reckon a change of scenery and a bit of greenery would sort you out? Then whisk yourself off to Alis and kick back among the stunning lakes, mountains, valleys and tablelands of Junin.

It lies 140 kilometres to the east of Lima, the capital of Peru.

The nearby localities of Yauyos and Huarochiri are worthy of your time. They're located 25 kilometres southwest and 50 kilometres west away, respectively. Get in the car and find out what they're all about!

Huancayo, 65 kilometres to the east, is a great day trip. You can use it as a base when visiting Plaza Constitucion, Huancayo Cathedral and Mayorista Market. If you need more persuading, other close by attractions include the Huancayo Zoo and Huanca Identity Park.

An exciting way to explore the greater region is to go on an outdoor adventure. Hiking is one of the most popular pastimes here. But if that's not up your alley, you could always go horse riding.

When it comes to slowing down, not much else tops getting out and going bird watching or wildlife watching.

Planning your own schedule can be fun, but every so often it's nice to let somebody else make all the tough decisions. Guided nature walks, wildlife spotting tours and city walking tours offer a hassle-free way to experience the region.

Step off solid ground and experience Junin from a whole new angle. With a variety of thrilling activities like canoeing and boating on offer, it's a great playground for water enthusiasts.

Stroll through the doors of the region's history museums, indoor markets and mansions and enjoy everything that they have to offer.

For something outside that everyone will love, stop by the local area's open-air markets.

If you have a keen interest in history, find some time to wander around the region's ruins and old towns. Do a little research beforehand or enlist the services of the nearest tour guide.

Learn a little about the local belief systems and maybe get in touch with your spirituality by exploring one or two of Alis' churches, cathedrals and monasteries.

Bank cards? Check. Wallet? Check. But have you packed your appetite? With some fantastic food and drink to gulp down around here, it's the one thing you shouldn't leave home without.

A common ingredient in the cuisine here is chicken. Another is tawri. Give them a try if you're not already a fan.

When Alis locals talk about their food, you might hear pachamanca (beef, herb and vegetable feast) or ceviche (raw fish in lime juice) mentioned a few times. These specialty dishes form part of the area's identity and ought to be on any foodie's must-eat list.

Calories don't count when you're on holiday, right? So it's an ideal excuse to indulge in some mazamorra morada and arroz con leche (purple corn custard and sweetened milk), a favourite dessert.

To beer or not to beer? That is the question. Of course, the answer should always be beer. When you're in this neck of the woods, Arequipeña is the one you want.

If the evening begs for something with more of a kick, ask for some Chicha de Jora (fermented corn-based alcoholic drink). On the rocks or neat — the bar person should know the nicest way to have it.

Take advantage of your time in the air by memorising some local expressions. First of all, try to pronounce '¡Salud!'. This means 'cheers/good health!'. Another one to commit to memory is '¡Hola!', meaning 'hello'.

Don't forget to pencil the 28th of July in your calendar. In Alis this means one thing — Independence Day. A notable day of celebrations, this is a terrific time of year to head to the country.

When your holiday comes to an end and it's time to say "Adiós" to Alis, don't be upset — you can always come back!

From Alis, it's 150 kilometres west to Jorge Chavez International Airport (LIM). This is the nearest airport. Remember to give yourself enough time to get there so you don't miss check-in.
