Holidays in Toyama

Sure, you could get your travel fix flicking through your friends' holiday pics. But we promise you'll have a whole lot more fun making your own amazing memories in Toyama!

This city is home to about 330,000 people.

The nation's capital, Tokyo, lies 240 kilometres southeast of Toyama, while Hida can be found 25 kilometres to the south.

Eager to have some fun the little ones? Toyama Family Park and Taikoyama Land are sure to put a smile on everyone's faces.

Taking a step into Uozu Aquarium is like taking a plunge into the depths of the sea, but without having to take your clothes off! Here you'll get close, but not too close, to all kinds of incredible marine life.

If you consider yourself a wine buff, seize the opportunity to stop by one of the area's wineries. You can try some of the best regional drops at Horaisan Winery & Yamafuji Vineyards.

For a lovely afternoon out, head over to the Himi Seaside Botanical Garden or the Botanic Gardens of Toyama. The meandering walkways and beautifully presented garden beds are sure to please. Many visitors also like to have a wander through the Tonami Tulip Park.

From kicking a ball around to simply relaxing on the grass, there are plenty of reasons to visit a green space like Ranjyo Forest or Toyamaken Fuganungakansui Park. Himinoe Park and Shogawa Water Memorial Park are also popular hangouts for visitors and locals alike.

Find the best vantage points to admire the shimmering waters of Shomyo Falls and Ryujin Waterfall.

Why not enjoy a stroll around Arimine Dam or Tokonijino-taki? Or, you might like to simply take a seat by the water's edge and keep your eyes open for interesting birds.

If you want to recharge those batteries, there are plenty of nature reserves and parks to explore. Start off with a deep breath of fresh air at Chubu-Sangaku National Park or Mt. Tateyama. Two further areas to have a look at are Hell Valley and Kurobe Dam.

Whether you want to build your knowledge or just take a break in the calm setting, the Toyama Municipal Folkcraft Village and the Toyama Municipal Folk Museum should do the job. Remember to look into group tours! Can't get enough? Also head to the Hotaruika Museum and the Izumi City Shinminato Museum.

The curious scientific artefacts and displays at the Toyama Science Museum and Toyama Port Observatory are bound to get your mind into gear. For even more from the wonderful world of science, head to the Kurobe Yoshida Science Museum. Be sure to ask around about any temporary exhibits that may be on.

With such a variety of terrific art collections to mull over, you might need a little push in the right direction. We suggest grabbing a coffee and heading straight for the Suiboku Museum or the Ippuku Museum of Art. More one-of-a-kind canvases and striking sculptures await you at the Museum of Modern Art, Toyama and the Rakusui-tei Museum of Art.

Learn all about the impact that Toyama's past people and events had on the nation, and sometimes the world, at the Himi City Museum and the Ainokura Folklore Museum. The Inotani Sekisyokan and the Takaoka Municipal Museum are also worth a day out for a better understanding of the past.

Get a glimpse into the past by visiting a few of Toyama's history-filled sites. There's quite a few to choose from, but the Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village and Ainokura Gassho-zukuri Village are a good place to start. If that's not enough to satisfy the history geek in you, head onward to the Takaoka Daibutsu Buddha and Takaoka Castle Remains.

Many of us had childhood fantasies that involved princes and princesses. Toyama Castle looks as though it was made for a fairytale book, so drop in and discover what the life of a royal is really like.

Whether you're a believer or simply after a little serenity, the Chokeiji Temple and Oyama Shrine are sure to add some deeper meaning to your stay. The Zuizenji Temple and Toyama Gokoku Shrine are some other historically important houses of worship to put on your itinerary.

It's much better to look over your life and say, 'I can't believe I did that,' rather than, 'I really wish I had done that.' So, while you're in Toyama you should also explore some of the lesser-known sights, such as the Umekama Museum and Mirage Land. Don't forget to stop by Kaiomaru Park and Iwase either.
