Sullivans Cove Apartments Review

Which is better for a one-night stay – a hotel or an apartment?

A hotel, where everything – buffet breakfast, concierge, hotel bar, and room service – are all a few steps or a phone call away, might seem like the obvious choice.

But there’s a time and place for a quick weekend escape to an apartment, and that time and place is Tasmania in winter. Specifically, Sullivans Cove Apartments in beautiful Hobart. Especially with this view on your doorstep!

There’s a lot to love about Sullivans’ unique offering: rather than one apartment block, it has five locations scattered around central Hobart, each with its own design touches and features.

But staying in an apartment doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the little joys of a hotel stay. Sullivans Cove’s rooms are serviced daily, guests enjoy free Wi-Fi, and there’s even a well-priced mini bar.

All guests check in and pick up their keys at a central office, which – conveniently for us – is located in a little courtyard just next to our home for the night in the Hunter Street Apartments complex.

We enter the charming sandstone building which also houses the Drunken Admiral Restaurant and find our apartment, ‘The Harbour side’, on level two. Serial over packers who take everything and the kitchen sink for even one night away (guilty) will be relieved to spot a luggage elevator, a welcome surprise given the building’s historic status.

Admittedly, #sydneylife gets you very used to small-apartment-living, but you’d be hard-pressed to not be wowed by the sheer space the suite has to offer.

Hubby and I do a lap of the apartment, literally. The combined living and kitchen area take up the front section, while one step up on the split level, two bedrooms and two bathrooms are adjoined by a small desk and storage areas, completing the loop. Gorgeous high ceilings and waterfront views of Hobart’s docks complement the understated luxury look.

Ridiculous spaciousness aside, we’re also more than a bit partial to The Harbour side’s design (“I wish this was our apartment” might have been uttered by both of us within five minutes of our arrival).  The building’s classic historic feel is enhanced by its minimalist interior – white brick walls, industrial beams, and wooden floors – while its modern tiled bathrooms, leather couch, and shiny new kitchen (complete with Miele appliances) add polish.

Speaking of the kitchen, it’s a big draw card.

On a cool Hobart evening, after a busy day of sightseeing, the thought of going outside again might not appeal. So pick up a few groceries and put the well-equipped kitchen – and cosy heating – to good use! Wursthaus Kitchen, a gourmet deli, and Salamanca Fresh, the local grocer, are great spots for picking up whatever takes your fancy. Cheese, dips, antipasto, and a bottle of local vino make for a great dinner if you don’t feel like getting fancy in the kitchen ;).

Of course, when you do feel like venturing out, the Hunter Street Apartments are perfectly located to enjoy the best of Hobart, even without a car.

Soak up the Saturday Salamanca Markets. Have breakfast at Machine Laundry Cafe. Enjoy a whisky (when in Hobart!) at The Glass House, suspended over Sullivans Cove. Pick up a pastry at one of Hobart’s many spectacular bakeries, including Jackman and McRoss at Battery Point. Catch the ferry to MONA and enjoy not only a dose of art and culture, but also a seriously good lunch at The Source Restaurant.

Best of all, now that I know I’m a fan of the Sullivans Cove Apartments concept, my accommodation plans for future Hobart breaks are sorted. I have their other locations shortlisted for my next trip – no research required. Now, to think of an excuse to return again soon and maybe even stay a little longer than a night ;).
