The bed was super comfortable and the refurbished bar and restaurant were excellent. The only downside was that the lift wasn’t working due to a new one being installed. It’s the second time that we’ve stayed in this hotel and it certainly won’t be the last

If you want to stay in a hovel stay in room 4

Lift out of action with wife e in wheelchair then given a room on 3rd floor. Lady on reception sorted room on ground floor and said it was an upgrade and would not charge. Went to room and it was a disgrace smelly radiator gave it rustic charm only because the radiator was totally rusty. I did ask if this was a upgrade and was told it was but as I then said you have upgraded us from a urinal to a sit down toilet. The manager appeared and hey ho we we moved next door and was miles better why not the day before

Hotel ok

Lovely breakfast Only downside is that the lift is not in use till October so its stairs all the way. They do provide help with your luggage but if you have mobility issues the stairs are an issue. We had been give a room on the third floor but the receptionist did move us to the first floor. Staff friendly and helpful. Will go back but when the lift is working. The first we knew was when i got an email but we was already in whitby.

The staff are amazing. The Royal is undergoing a major refurb, but no inconvenience caused with the cleaner's doing an exceptional job. I was booked in for bed and breakfast of which the breakfast was well worth the money and the service again excellent.

Good property overall but undergoing renovations that we were not told about. This included work on the lift so this was not available. Room was well presented and very good quality. Good location close to many landmarks.

a lot of money for a disappointing service

Room recently renovated nice decor and facilities were good and good breakfast but on arrival we were given a room not reflecting what we booked and paid for. a twin instead of a double no sea view as scaffolding across the window. not normally a problem but when you pay extra for it. Lift out of order till September not ideal and no information provided regarding this long term issue.we were promised a £20 deduction a night to compensate which we noticed wasnt applied and had to ask at checkout as they had conveniently forgot. Receptionist was rude as I asked for accessible rooms if they had them and she was saying what did i mean by accessible??? What more did I need to say given that I was standing there with a walking stick. They didnt change our room just pushed the beds together and prrovided a duvet that didnt fit the bed. at this point I gave up saying anything. £160 a night for this service etc is excessive.

Undergoing a stunning refurbishment

The hotel is currently going through a complete renovation. Whilst it was a shame we were not informed of the fact that there was a lot of building work going on and no functioning lift, thankfully it didn’t really cause us any disturbance (other than no lift up to the 3rd floor!). The room we stayed in was quite dated and showing signs of damp, with pieces of the wooden window frames completely rotted, however, we can see that the hotel is undergoing a complete renovation and the parts which have already been updated are absolutely stunning, including the bar and restaurant areas. The staff are faultless and the food was beautiful. The location is a bit out of town, accessed via a lot of hills or steps, however the view is incredible. We will definitely return and look forward to seeing the hotel after its refurbishment.

We stayed in a newly renovated sea view small double room and it was lovely. Little touches like the sensor light in the bathroom so no need to put a big light on during the night or the little reading lights each side of the side of the bed was nice. Breakfast had an amazing selection. Wish we could have stayed an extra night or 2.

Love this place especially with renovations and new restaurant. However do not put people in rooms directly over the ballroom (first floor, east wing), The live entertainment goes on until 11pm and literally shakes the room!

Was not aware of comprehensive building works and scaffolding around building. Parking was on street and payable as builders using hotel car park. Hot water in sink tap but not so hot in bathtap and plug in bath leaked. Otherwise quite good. Excellent sea view.

The staff were excellent on arrival - friendly and informative. The room was comfortable, though the limited opening of the window restricted the amount of fresh air that could be drawn in. The building is currently undergoing refurbishment and the scaffolding on the outside did impact the sea view somewhat, but this did not detract from the overall experience.
