Group Retreat Tucson Foothills Mountain Views Epic
Welcome to Arizona living at its most unique and enchanting. Tucked away in the Westward Look neighborhood near W Ina Rd and N Oracle Rd, this custom-built 1960 adobe home offers an unforgettable stay steeped in Tucson’s desert history. The home was built during Tucson’s “Hollywood of the Desert” era, a time when Columbia Pictures constructed Old Tucson Studios and major film stars like John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Paul Newman, and Burt Lancaster were spending their days under the southern Arizona sun. According to our family’s stories, this home became a social gathering point for some of these Hollywood personalities, and you can still feel that spirit in its walls.
We’ve made the intentional decision not to modernize the space but instead preserve the soul of the house — original adobe bricks, handcrafted doors, mid-century lighting, and antique furnishings collected or passed down through generations. Guests often describe the home as quirky, eclectic, even otherworldly — like stepping into a magazine spread full of character and soul. The beauty of the home comes from its imperfections and charm. It’s not trying to be new — it’s trying to remind you of where Tucson came from.
Though located within the city, the property feels like its own peaceful retreat. The front yard is beautifully landscaped with Sonoran desert plants and mature trees. Wildlife sightings are part of the experience here — you might catch a glimpse of javelinas, coyotes, lizards, bunnies, birds, and if you're lucky (or surprised), even a bobcat. The Sonoran Desert is exciting but can be dangeous, so please keep an eye on little ones. The large shaded patio is perfect for relaxing outdoors, reading a book, or enjoying dinner beneath the desert sky. There’s also a built-in grill and firepit for those perfect Tucson evenings. In the spring and early summer, the kumquat tree in the backyard might even gift you a sweet surprise.
Inside, the living room greets you with huge picture windows that flood the home with natural light and desert views. The antique ceiling fans, while not currently operational, are part of the home’s vintage charm and will one day be restored to working condition. There’s a large sectional, a pair of orange vintage chairs, a funky old safe turned side table, and seating areas tucked throughout the room. A collection of National Geographics and antique books line the shelves, many of which can inspire your next travels. The fireplace is purely decorative, but the art of its unique glass centerpiece adds to the mood. The home has multiple levels, so watch your step as you move from space to space.
The kitchen is like stepping back in time in the best way — original cabinets painted in 60s-inspired colors, a functional vintage oven, newer fridge and stovetop, and everything you need to cook and entertain. Bar stools at the counter give it a casual breakfast-bar vibe, while the dining room just off the kitchen seats eight comfortably and features some of our favorite collected artwork. This is also one of the best places to enjoy views of the backyard and pool. The dual climate control system helps keep both sides of the house comfortable year-round.
This home offers four bedrooms and four bathrooms, each with its own personality. The primary suite is spacious, with a king bed, en-suite bathroom, and sliding door that opens to the backyard. It’s a peaceful place to spread out, unwind, and maybe even practice some yoga. The second and third bedrooms each have a queen bed and share a unique Jack-and-Jill shower setup, though each has its own toilet and sink. One room has a lovely view of the front garden, while the other is a little more tucked away for those who like extra quiet. The fourth bedroom includes a full bed and a twin bed, a small desk, hand-painted mural on the closet doors, and a full bathroom with a tub/shower combo — perfect for kids or anyone who appreciates a little extra character in their space.
In the back of the home is one of our favorite spaces — a game room and library area that features a pool table and a built-in reading nook. Whether you’re looking for friendly competition or a cozy hideaway with a book, this area is always a guest favorite. Step outside from here and you’ll find the large crystal-clear pool — hands-down the centerpiece of the home. It’s where most guests end up spending their time, lounging in the sun or taking a dip before dinner. The outdoor dining table seats six and sits beneath the shade of mature trees, making it the perfect place to gather after a day of exploring.
While this home may not be for everyone, it’s a one-of-a-kind experience for those who appreciate homes with stories to tell. It’s not brand-new. The doors might squeak. Some of the windows stick. And you’ll spot things that would never be found in a standard vacation rental — like pendant lights that glow with history or artwork you won’t find in any store. But that’s exactly why people fall in love with it. If you’re looking for a place with soul, with personality, and with a little bit of magic, this is the home for you. We can’t wait to share it with you.
