Gone Fishin' | Private Hot Tub, BBQ & Garage Lounge | Pet-Friendly Mountain Hideaway in Story, WY | 3 Bed, Sleeps 6 | 20 Min to Sheridan

Summary:

Some places you visit. This one you feel.

Tucked into the quiet mountain community of Story, Wyoming, Gone Fishin’ is the kind of getaway that makes you forget what day it is—and that’s exactly the point. There’s no pretense here, no marble countertops or concierge desks. What you’ll find is a warm, comfortable home with a private hot tub waiting under a sky so full of stars it almost doesn’t look real.

You’ll wake up to the sound of birds instead of alarms. You’ll sip your morning coffee on the porch while deer wander through the neighborhood like they own the place (they do). You’ll fire up the BBQ, let the kids chase the dog around the yard, and spend your evenings soaking in the hot tub while the Bighorn Mountains turn gold at sunset.

This is a 3-bedroom retreat that sleeps six comfortably, with an open living space that makes it easy for everyone to be together without being on top of each other. The garage has been converted into a lounge area—your own private space to relax with the hot tub just steps away.

Story is a tiny town with a big heart, just 20 minutes from downtown Sheridan and minutes from some of the best fly fishing, hiking, and mountain scenery in Wyoming. Whether you’re here for an anniversary, a family reunion, a hunting trip, or just because you need a week away from everything—this is the place.

Bring your dog. Bring your fishing rod. Leave your stress at the state line.

Message us to start planning your stay—we’re a small team at Wyo Stays, and we genuinely care about making your trip something you’ll talk about long after you’ve gone home.

The Space:

Step inside and you’ll find a straightforward, comfortable home that’s been set up to make your stay feel effortless. The layout is open and easy—a kitchen, dining area, and living room that all flow together, so whether you’re cooking breakfast or gathering for a movie night, everyone’s part of the moment.

The front door opens into the main living area, with the master bedroom to your right. Walk past the kitchen and dining space and you’ll find the second bedroom and a bunk room just beyond—ideal for kids, hunting buddies, or anyone who draws the short straw. An air mattress is available if you need to squeeze in one more. One full bathroom serves the home, and it’s been stocked with everything you’ll need.

Now for the best part: step through the door off the kitchen and you’ll enter the garage lounge—a converted space that houses your private hot tub. After a day of hiking, fishing, or simply doing nothing at all, this is where the night begins. Soak under a canopy of Wyoming stars, let the tension leave your shoulders, and remind yourself why you came here in the first place.

Out back, you’ve got a yard with space for kids and pets to roam, a BBQ grill for those perfect summer dinners, and the kind of quiet that makes you realize how noisy your normal life actually is.

The Neighborhood:

Story, Wyoming is one of those places people stumble across and then quietly keep to themselves. It’s a small mountain community at the base of the Bighorns where deer stroll through front yards, wild turkeys nest in the cottonwoods, and the loudest sound at night is the creek.

Your neighbors are friendly, the dogs roam free, and the pace of life is exactly what you’d hope for when you’re looking to disconnect. It’s common to spot deer and rabbits daily. Bear and mountain lion sightings are rare but not unheard of, so keep your eyes open and enjoy the wildness of it all.

The best fly fishing in the region is minutes from your front door. If you want a change of pace, downtown Sheridan is just 20 minutes away—think antique shops along Main Street, local breweries, wine bars, family restaurants, and boutique shopping that feels like stepping back in time. Golfers will find an award-winning course just 10 minutes out.

For the adventurers: Red Grade Road offers breathtaking views in spring and summer (high-clearance vehicle recommended), or take the route above Dayton to Lake Sibley, Steamboat Rock, and beyond. History buffs will love Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site, just five miles south—the epicenter of Red Cloud’s War and one of the most significant frontier sites in the American West.

Whether you’re casting a line, hiking a trail, or just sitting on the porch watching the sun set behind the mountains—you’ll feel the difference here. Have questions about what to do? Send us a message. We live here, and we love helping our guests discover the best of this place.

Getting Around:

Getting around Story and nearby Sheridan can be as active or relaxed as you wish. While some local spots are walkable, you may prefer a quick drive to reach the area’s top attractions—most are under 10 minutes away. Story itself does not have rideshare or taxi services; however, Sheridan (about 20 minutes away) does. If you’d like to explore the surroundings in a fun, eco-friendly way, ask us about our e-bike or regular bicycle rentals.

Looking for more than just a bike? We can help coordinate shuttle services, car rentals, or even a fully charged Tesla Model 3 (when available). Whether you’re planning an adventurous day trip or a cozy night in, we’re here to ensure you have everything you need. Message us anytime with your transportation wishes or for insider tips on the best local spots!

Other Things to Note:

A few things to know so your stay goes smoothly:

A quiet place to stay

I’ll start with what we enjoyed about this property. From beginning to end, communication with the host was very simple and genuine. The host seem to genuinely care about their renters. The hot tub was a slice of heaven, especially with the snow that welcomed us. I sincerely appreciated how warm it was, and the hot tub itself was very clean. The laundry smelled fresh, and the location is very quiet. This would be a perfect spot for a hunting retreat, but perhaps not quite the rustic “cabin” stay, that we had had in mind. Even though the unit is older, it is in good condition. It is a pet friendly rental, and there is a slight pet odor, if that something that bothers you it may be more noticeable. I wouldn’t call it overwhelming I would just say it’s there. Our biggest dislike about this property were the beds were very uncomfortable, and I would suggest anybody coming to bring blankets as you may want them to snuggle up on the couches. The outside patio area is an excellent addition, and would be great for parties. Looking to play cards, gather, cook, or just spend time closer to the outdoors. The property is not quite as scenic as the pictures suggest, but still private and close to town. Curtains would have been a nice addition to the side of the home that faces towards the street. Overall a quality location to stay.
