Known as The Hope the village dates from the 13th century and many of the harbour buildings date from the 17th century. The village is close to stunning sandy beaches and the island of South Ronaldsay is connected to other islands -including Orkney Mainland where the capital Kirkwall is located- by the historical Churchill Barriers (causeways). You can be exploring Kirkwall in 25 minutes and be over in wonderful Stromness in 40 minutes. The Hope is also one of two places where ferries from the north coast of Scotland arrive.
