Sunny riverfront 4 BR, 2BA with wrap-around deck, peaceful views, paddling, hiking, world-class fishing, abundant bird life, in central Pennsylvania.

The space
With many beautiful and little-known covered bridges, Amish farms, real farmers' markets, and one of the few remaining drive-in movies in the United States, this area in central PA is almost a step back in time. The house is close to the charming village of Selinsgrove, to Bucknell University, Susquehanna University, at least 13 vineyards, thousands of acres of state forest lands for hiking, and glorious, rolling fields of corn in the heart of summer. Only a few yards from the river, it has lots of light and a warm, simple feeling. Family meals are a pleasure in the sun room that overlooks the river. There are two floors one large bedroom with full bed on first floor, one large bedroom with full bed on second, and two other bedrooms upstairs, one with two twins, one with one. The guest limit of four reflects the capacities of the very old septic system. The lot has plenty of parking space and can easily accommodate four cars. Minimum stay is five nights and longer stays preferred. We routinely see bald eagles (there are at least two nesting pairs on the islands), kingfishers, mergansers, swallows, herons, orioles, song sparrows, nuthatches, egrets, and many other birds. There are deer on the islands, sometimes wading across river channels. In the state forests, we have seen black bears and many wild turkeys, hawks, woodpeckers. Sunsets and sunrises over the river are particularly beautiful.

Probably my least favorite VRBO experience. Start with having to make payments to a PayPal account in Denmark. The request resembled the many Nigerian Prince scams that are so common that I had to check with VRBO that it was legitimate. I received several phone calls at wee hours of the morning, from a Denmark number, urging me to pay quickly even though I had most of a week before the required deadline. I never felt confident that this would work until I opened the door of the rental. I felt the protections offered by a credit card transaction were stronger. But, a cute house and great location right on the river with a large sized deck. But the stairs to the door were covered with green mold as was the area by the front door. The front door and window were covered with old spider webs and dead spiders. Not a great first impression. Then when opening the front door we were hit with a really strong musty odor. This was September so it is not as if the house was closed-up all winter. It had all summer to air out and smell fresh. I had windows open, three fans running continuously and switched between heat and air conditioning for a week and the odor barely diminished. It permeated the furniture and curtains, anything fabric including some of the bedding, which aggravated my asthma and made sleeping difficult.I was there to assist with caregiving my 98 year-old mother otherwise I would have packed up and left. I recognize that this was a 100 year-old house right on the
