Isolated lakeside house, view of glaciers & volcanoes, good for day trips - new!

Herrukot, our holiday home built in 2015, is located in a gorgeous isolated location right on the lakeside. The house contains two separate bedrooms, each with very comfortable beds that are 90x200 cm in size, a bathroom with a floor-level shower, underfloor heating throughout the house, living/dining room with a pull-out sofa bed for two, and a completely equipped kitchen including a dishwasher, a ceramic-top stove (4 hobs), and an oven. With a floor area of 66 sq.m, it offers a relaxing vacation. Wi-Fi is available at no cost, as well as bed linen, bath towels, and dish towels. The icing on the cake is the 60-sq.m wooden terrace with its own hot tub and a fantastic view of the lake, mountains, and the Hekla Volcano. The house is somewhat isolated, though because of its ideal location in the Southern Region, it is great for winter stays. The Northern Lights are a completely different experience as there are no lights from nearby houses. Our farmhouse is just 400 m away, you can certainly ride out from our farm. We put a major focus on ensuring that your individual wishes are fulfilled, and are happy to help plan your excursions!

We had a wonderful stay at the lakehouse. It is pretty isolated, but the farm is close enough if you need anything. We loved being able to relax and the peace and calm of the location. The hot tub was wonderful and clean; we used it every morning and every night. The beds were also very comfortable. My husband fell in love with the heated floors, pretty sure he wanted to sleep on them instead of the bed. You will need to rent a car to stay here, but it's in a great location to take day trips to waterfalls, volcanoes, and Reykjavík.

This house was perfect for our needs during our stay. The house was clean and well cared for. Even though it was October, we loved the deck to be able to view the Northern Lights or sit in the hot tub. The collection of windows in the living room area offers a great view of lake and lots of natural light. The kitchen had everything we needed for our stay. Everything was easy to use in the house and the directions left by the host helped with any technical things. The host was also kind to let us see some of their horses before we left. We would absolutely stay here again.

Lovely lakeside cottage

The setting of the cottage is private and beautiful and we enjoyed relaxing in the geothermal hot tub in the evenings. Renata has horses and we did a one hour ride on the property which we thoroughly enjoyed. We would stay there again despite the 4/5 star rating. The cottage is well stocked with dishes, spices and oil, but it was not very conducive to cooking due to the limited scratched up Tephlon pans. There are also no screens on the windows (which I think may be the norm in Iceland) so we had quite a few fly visitors join us inside after having the windows open. Despite these minor issues, we loved the setting and waking up to the beautiful views of the lake and glacier. Truly stunning. Very easy to access all of the south Iceland and golden circle highlights.

Absolutely Fantastic !!!

We just stayed at Renate's cottage March 2025. This is a phenomenal cottage: Modern yet cozy, very clean, with large deck with hot tub overlooking the lake. Its private/quiet yet only about 20 mln out of nearest towns (supermarket, bakery, fuel, restaurants, liquor store) Great location if you have a car, within an 1 1/2 hours you can visit spots along Golden Circle, Pingtheviller National Park, Laugarvatn or Hvammik Spa. Hella Caves is 20 min away. Host was very friendly, responsive and helpful. Great stay ! Looking forward to returning !

Fantastic!

We had a great stay here! The owner made everything super easy and self-explanatory. We found it to be exactly what we were hoping it would be - easy, comfortable, and perfect for day trips. We also enjoyed the hot tub on the deck and seeing the horses as we drove by each day.

Best stay we’ve have in Iceland

This was our third time visiting the island and we could not have had a better stay. The house was exactly what we were looking for, and the hosts were fantastic. The communication was excellent and they were kind enough to message us on an amazing display of the northern lights to make sure we didn’t miss it. I cannot wait to make sure my friends book this location on their trips and we will definitely be back!

Absolutely amazing home with beautiful views!

Remote Stay Outside of Selfoss

Lovely remote location on the side of a lake on an Icelandic horse farm. Property was immaculate and allowed for a very cozy stay during a snowstorm/road closure. Cabin was amazingly sturdy during 60mph winds. Hot tub was great despite the brutal wind and snow. Trees provided a great wind break. Thankfully bought groceries at Knonan in Selfoss before we arrived (and some wine/beer at the duty free on our arrival at KEF). Although remote, we had great connectivity to deal with a crisis at home. Host communicated with us on Christmas morning to warn us about the road conditions. We also saw the host on Boxing Day, and she was very welcoming. Cabin is about 20 minutes from Selfoss "city center" and a 30-minute trip to Midgard Adventure (further east on the Ring Road) in Hvolsvöllur, where we took an amazing all-day tour after we checked out of this property. Overall, a great stay for our family of 5. No Northern Lights this time, but if back in Iceland, we would stay here again.

Beautiful cabin on the lake

Location - we loved being so close to the horse farm. Renate was very kind and welcoming and gave us a tour of the farm. We will be sure to return in the summer to go for a ride as well. The location was also great for the golden circle and the secret lagoon.Cabin - it was very well insulated and cozy, even in December. Everything was very well constructed (doors, windows, latches) and we had everything that we needed for delicious dinners in (we bought groceries from Bonus and Kronan). The beds were comfortable too. Hot pot - this was amazing! It was hot and very cozy. We enjoyed ending our days in the hot pot every night of our stay. Most nights were cloudy but one night, it was clear and we had a great view of the big dipper :)Thank you for a wonderful stay :)

Central, yet somehow isolated

Our group of four really appreciated our stay at this property. It was just over an hour out of Reykjavik, and gave us a convenient place to head toward the south coast one day and the Golden Circle the next. The views were stunning, the house was well appointed, and the floor heating was remarkably efficient. There were a couple of nitpicks, although they did not really impact our stay. While we did see a snow covered mountain from the deck, did we really see a glacier? The bedrooms are small, and the windows caused us a bit of grief. We also had to go to the end of the driveway for a northern view the one early morning we could see a bit of the Northern Lights, since trees block the northerly view from the house, but again, these are small issues. I would wholeheartedly recommend a stay at this property if the location fits with your Iceland touring plans. Just keep going past the horse farm when you first arrive; the owners live there, but the house is further along the road. They were nice about it when Google Maps had me turn there; we probably weren’t the first to do so.

Just “wow!”

Choose this place for a great view over a lovely lake, a large deck with a spacious hot tub feed by natural hot water, very clean and thoughtfully built and supplied house, quiet surroundings and the best horse riding experience around! We LOVED our stay here. Renata and her family are so friendly.

Amazing Time

The Lake House was beautiful and clean. It was a great spot to start all our adventures traversing the South side of Iceland. We arrived later in the day and had a bit of an embarrassing mix-up with our directions. However, Renate was very nice about us driving into the horse training area, sorry again for that. She was also very responsive to all our needs and our stay was just wonderful. We did not see the Northern Lights, but that may just mean we have to go back. Next time during a month when they are more prevalent. Thank you for everything Renate, you were a great host!

Great Location - super relaxing - everything you need

Stayed here with two kids and two adults - fantastic location, very peaceful and quiet. Located about 5 km off of the main highway 1, it was a great central place to take in some of the Golden Circle sights and also going down to Vik and the Black Sand Beach. Rejkavik was also within reach if we desired, but we had a separate stay in Rejkavik. Would definitely stay here again.

Southern Iceland gem

We deeply enjoyed our time at this fabulous and unique property. Visiting in March, we caught the northern lights 3 out of 6 nights. The location is secluded and serene; you basically have a private lake. The extremely large windows in the living and dining areas really draw you into the landscape, simply fantastic! The proximity to natural attractions and Selfoss for food/dining/shops was very good, with the house as our base of operations for a 1 week trip. We greatly enjoyed the hot tub and found the entire premises very spiffy and well maintained. The owners were very warm and accessible, checking that we settled in and had everything we needed. The internet was 100% reliable and worked well to satisfy all needs for a device-heavy family of 4. Amazing clear night views of more stars than you’ve probably ever seen. Brush up on your photography. You’ll experience absolute silence, except for the whispering wind. The perfect place to unwind and immerse yourself in Iceland.

Cozy, clean, and peaceful ! Loved it !

This rental was a wonderful place to stay with her family and two kids it had everything we needed. The kitchen was well stocked, nice bed linens and towels. The heating system was superb, and lots of opportunities to open the windows and French doors to letting some fresh air. The view of the frozen lake was spectacular. Lovely to hear the wind wrestling through the trees at night, and total tranquility.
