Our second visit to The Union. We stayed for one week and we just love its warm and friendly atmosphere.
Set in Chapel street with lots of interesting cafes and shops plus a short walk to the seafront.
The worst part was the noisy bar in the space below us. A very good jazz band played until a reasonable late hour. But all night long, it seemed, rowdy folk cavorted in the street below our window. Hardly the bar patrons, who were older and wiser. THEY appreciated the music that they listened to attentively..
I should add that the breakfast was fine and the breakfast server was extremely pleasant. The desk staff was, on the other hand, of the rough and (almost) ready variety.
Lovely Older Hotel - Full of History and Character
We stayed at the Union Hotel in Penzance for 10 days and enjoyed it thoroughly. The location was central and convenient on historic Chapel Street. The hotel itself was full of historical information about Lord Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar. Original 20th century and contemporary paintings also added to its charm.
Our room was quiet and clean with a view of the bay.
The staff was friendly, helpful and full of fun.
The food served at dinner time was very good. The fact that the Pub was frequented by locals as well as hotel guests made for an interesting mix that we liked.

A hotel with lots of character
This is a hotel that is somewhat run down with lots of character. Don't expect a super comfortable room with plush bed. The rooms are fairly clean but run down. The hotel is old with lots of history. The owner will spin tales of local history and the breakfast is very good. I would stay here again but it's not the kind of place you want to spend a week in.

Nice hotel in the centre of Penzance
Room ready on arrival even though we were early. Excellent breakfasts. Numerous pubs and restaurants within 5-10 minutes walking.
I was very impressed by this hotel, for a little price got an excellent service and a comfortable room.

Name
We found the hotel to be comfortable and homely. The staff were cheerful and helpful at all times, and being right in the centre of the old town meant that we we close to all the amenities.
We were somewhat taken aback by the seriously dated room interior, flimsy creaky wooden stools and a bed which had gone flat on one side and had random broken springs on the other.
Whilst being disappointed by the customer services skills, we needed an iron and we got one which the owner described in his own words as something Expedia wont allow me to post on this site.
We read another review about the strict breakfast timings so got there in plenty of time, but someone arriving a few moments before 9:30 was actually told "as long as you only want a slice of bread, we won't have a problem"
We liked this old inn so much stayed another night. The location was great to discover local highlights. St..Michael's Mount, Lands End etc. We had the best meal here that we have eaten in England, good breakfast with huge choice. Our room was comfortable. Felt like we were in another era. The staff helpful. The manager/owner had the best sense of humour, a lot of fun.
Try it, so much cheaper than the places by the water. A 17 quid lobster meal and 10 for delicious lamb is hard to beat.
Historic building in the heart of the town minutes from the sea/harbour. Very atmospheric. Room was spacious and clean. Cooked breakfast was good. Overall, good value. The food in the bar was first rate. Would have stayed extra nights if they'd had availability.
it is an old hotel with lots of history and some lovely pictures and quirky parts of bar and hotel
which were nice. Unfortunately the bedrooms could do with some upgrades-nice old fashioned bed/linen and curtains but old woodchip wallpaper very dated and tired looking. we had dog
with us so we were possibly in "dog friendly" room?even so -get rid of the woodchip!!!
staff were polite and friendly and woman working in breakfast room was brilliant and couldnt do enough for you. Owner was bit abrupt to customers in bar area but credit where its do we had crap bar meal(veg soup-no taste & watery & jacket potato with tuna-powdery & mushy) but owner took plates away & refunded payment for meal-which was good of him we didnt ask for it. Our room was like an oven-no ventilation-window was fixed so couldnt be opened more than an inch and bathroom fan didnt work. Breakfast was good although not many tables, so if busy you had to wait (somewhere else) for table to become available-this isnt good if you have planned to go somewhere and have to wait to have breakfast.
Generally it was an average hotel in an ideal location close to town & sea.

Great over night stay in central penzance
great location, charming staff, great night's stay in Penzance.
Avoid it unless you want to go to the bar til late
I'm not one to give 1 star ratings lightly but here we are. We arrived on a Saturday night at about 9pm. When we arrived we arrived to a closed front desk window with a sign saying something like "please ask for assistance from someone at the bar next door." So I set down my bag and walk into the bar, the place was packed! I had to stand at the bar waiting for service from one of the bartenders, being ignored several times because I think it was obvious I wasn't looking to buy a drink before getting served. We get the key to the room and go up. Our room reeks of smoke, really could use a fresh coat of pain and is directly above the bar and did I mention the live music?
Outside our window is an interior open space where all the windows face each other, right outside our window a rotting dead bird that has been there for some time. The music and crowd was extremely loud and the music went until at least midnight or so when my body finally gave out and I finally fell asleep in spite of the noise. Not a great place to show up and be exhausted at but just fine if you want to go and then go to the bar and drink the night away I guess. It's too bad because the hotel common areas look so cool and so old world but the rooms aren't kept up nearly as well and the management definitely cares more about the bar than the hotel. It felt like some place you'd stop off the highway with a neon sign advertising their absurdly cheap rates but the problem was it wasn't cheap.
Was promised early breakfast so we could catch 7am flight to Scilly. Went to reception at 6.30am to be told we had cancelled breakfast the night before???
Room was hot because of heat wave, asked for fan but were told to buy one if we wanted one!
Was promised family room for same price of double but they gave family room to late booking.
No refund offered for no breakfast or loss of family room!.
Very disappointed so won't recommend.

Character in spades
Full of character, but in need of some TLC. We knew what to expect and the hotel lived up to that expectation. The height of luxury it is not, but has character in spades. Enjoyed live music. Manuel(Fawlty towers) would not have been out of place. In fact I think he was there!
In a good position and nice view from our room.

Good location, welcoming.
Verp pleasant stay of 2 nights. Howie, the Manager was very pleasant and helpful with information and had someone carry our bags upstairs to the 2nd f Fl. for us. Had probably the best breakfast ever here - and consistent with the same quality both days. A very old establishment, not in the best of health but comfortable and certainly adequate. Good location but very poor parking facilities. Two downsides for me was no wi-fi in the rooms (but available free in the Bar area) and the morning waiter. Most unpleasant and almost surly. After 2 mornings all we'd got was "tea, coffee and you finished with that". Not an asset to an otherwise very nice, welcoming team.
The service was kind and efficient, but it doesn't make up for the horrible condition of the room. The heat was unbearable, the curtains were falling down, the bathtub had scalding water that sprayed from the hose. The bed mattresses were old and too soft. It was not pleasant to return to our room after a full day in the sun.
The location is very convenient, the parking is in the back, the hotel has character, and is clean. Thew breakfast was first class, Staff adorable. We will be back.
The hotel is very dated and as we have stayed before we were aware what to expect. The extra we paid for a sea view did not disappoint and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was the problem, whilst the bath was spacious there was no shower but push on shower attatchment but this had holes in so leaked water. The breakfast though could not be faulted with both quantity and quality an excellant full english and the option to mix and match.
Was a bit put off on arrival but it was probably our own fault because we arrived too early. We intended just asking whether we could leave our cases and park the car but we weren't given the chance and were just told we were too early. However once we had explained everything was ok. We had a lovely room on the top floor. Granted it was a long way to climb carrying cases but its a building which dates back to 16th century so you cant expect a lift. I didn't mind as I took several times a day up and down as good exercise and the view was superb over the harbour & St Michaels Mount especially at night. It's a wonderful central location, lots of character and history. Breakfast was excellent and served in the fascinating Theatre Bar. However I would not recommend the lunchtime soup. My husband was not sure what his soup was (and he is a chef) and it was cold. Mine was fish chowder and all i can say is I didn't like it. However we will definitely stay again. We have stayed several places in Penzance and would say the Union is the best value.
