In the Area:
1. Lost River State Park (35 minutes away): Lost River State Park’s almost 4000 acres feature a public swimming pool, horseback trail riding, miles of hiking trails, and a “ripped from the 1980s” ⅓ mile exercise trail that is especially a hit with the kids. Lost River is known for its Cranny Crow overlook on top of Big Ridge Mountain, which offers a commanding view of five counties.
2. Kimsey Run Lake (22 minutes away) offers a great spot for fishing, and you’ll often see eagles floating overhead.
3. Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad (40 mins away): As you wind along the South Branch of the Potomac River, you’ll enter a visually striking gorge known as the Trough. One of the most scenic spots along the South Branch, the Trough is home to American bald eagles. All excursions are round-trip and include narration.
4. Trout Pond (35 mins): boasts two beautiful lakes: Rock Cliff Lake and Trout Pond. Relax on a sandy mountain beach or fish for stocked trout while kids splash in the cool waters of Rock Cliff Lake. Trout Pond, home to native Brook trout, is the only natural lake in West Virginia.
5. Hiking at the Appalachian Trail (distance from house - 1 hr 7 mins away) The famous Appalachian Trail runs through parts of the region, offering hikers a chance to explore the beauty of the mountains and forested landscapes that define this area.
6. Blackwater Falls State Park (1 hr 5 mins away): Blackwater Falls State Park is named for the amber waters of Blackwater Falls, a 57-foot cascade tinted by the tannic acid of fallen hemlock and red spruce needles. The falls, along with a few of the park’s other features like Elakala Falls, Lindy Point, and Pendleton Point Overlook, are some of the state’s most photographed spots.
7. Rock Climbing at Seneca Rocks (distance from house - 1 hr, 13 mins away). Experienced climbers or those looking for an adventure, Seneca Rocks offers some of the best climbing in the region. If you’re not into climbing, you can enjoy the scenic views from the top with a moderate hike.
