Holiday In Montevideo

Situated on the southern coast of Uruguay is a vibrant city with more cultural happenings in a square block than most people know what to do with.

Montevideo isn’t on most people’s travel list, but you’re not most people, and this place is on your list because of the eclectic markets, the opera house and fine leather goods. Check out lastminute.com.au’s Montevideo package deals discover something new in South America.

Best Things to Do in Montevideo

You’ve arrived—now what? For starters, check out lastminute.com.au’s car rentals in Montevideo, get one and head to the Plaza Indepencia. The country’s most important square is the perfect place to begin your holiday in Montevideo. The main attraction of the plaza is the Artigas Mausoleum, a massive monument to Uruguayan hero Jose Artigas, “the father of Uruguayan nationhood”. A guy with a nickname like that definitely deserves his own building.

Next on your list of to-dos should be a visit to the Palacio Taranco in the Old City. This building is the home of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Montevideo, and it holds a whole bunch of paintings, sculptures, European furniture and ornaments. The first floor is where some of the personal furniture of Louis XV and Louis XVI is on display. The latter Louis didn’t need it anymore because he came down with some head issues.

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

When you’re ready to go shopping, make a stop at the La Feria Tristan Narvaja Flea Market. The local vendors here sell everything from T-shirts to polished mineral stones and antique furniture. In a nutshell, you can buy pretty much whatever you want. If you’d like to get your hands on some of the better leather goods around, go to the Montevideo Leather Factory. Get a custom-made jacket and make your dreams of becoming Fonzie come true!

When you get hungry in Montevideo, you’ve got to go over to the Port Market—locally known as the meat market—in the old Victorian-era railway building. The Uruguayans are masters at the art of grilling, and you’ll know what we mean when you take a bite of skirt steak stacked in a chivito. What’s a chivito? It’s a local sandwich topped with hard-boiled egg slices and vegetables. If this is all you eat during your Montevideo holiday, that’d be enough.

You came. You shopped. You ate. The day is over, but the night is just beginning. Plenty of Montevideo packages have hotels in the Old City near the opera house. Catch an opera performance at the Teatro Solis, the country’s oldest theatre. There’s nothing like sipping Tannat grape wine while listening to people sing as loudly as possible. When the show’s over and you’d like to hit the night spots, go to the Rambla of Montevideo, an avenue that runs along the city’s coastline. There’s plenty of bars and discotheques to keep you occupied until the sun rises, so party hearty.
