The city is also known for traditional festivals and historical performances, especially the Giostra del Saracino in June and September: the knights of the districts challenge each other by hitting a wooden statue with a spear. Cortona, the main cultural and tourist center of Val di Chiana, is 30 km away and Lake Trasimeno only 40 km. Do not miss a visit by ferry to the islands of Polvese and Maggiore. The area around the lake is also full of trekking or cycling trails.
