Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service, room comfort
This was a family stay and this hotel was very convenient for us all. Although Quirky the rooms were spotless and adequate. The food was also excellent, with a great choice for breakfast and dinner, and all the staff were really friendly.
The redeeming factor of this old property is the Staff. They quite simply work their sock of to make your stay bearable, problem is the place is stuck in a time warp and needs drastic remedial action.
The photos on site look marvellous, but in reality the place is run down.
Food is of a very reasonable quality and the drinks selection are very good, but I like comfort not quirky.

We really enjoyed staying at forest lodge. We were made to feel very welcome and relaxed in the bar area. Staff were welcoming and kind and friendly. A lady gave us a free bottle of Prosecco to help us celebrate our anniversary. Sitting in the bar having a meal and a drink was one of my highlights on our break.
Some of the hotels main procedures cause them a bit of difficulty. For instance asking everyone for photo ID at check in- if this needs to be done it could be done at booking. Also taking £50 on hold from every guest as this often isn’t returned very quickly and I heard many guests complaining about this amongst themselves. I still haven’t received my refund either. Parts of Forest lodge need redecoration, maintenance and love. The indoor areas are not just old but tarnished and in need of redecoration. The biggest problem we encountered was the awful smell as you walk through the lodge and into the annex- the annex smells appallingly of mould. I don’t think that can be healthy. It’s up to an intolerable level. Our room- room number 6- was in the annex and it was quite hard to tolerate that stench. As we walked through on the day of departure and saw all the rooms being cleaned room 6 is probably one of the smallest and less comfy rooms also. It isn’t cheap to stay at forest lodge so their prices need to respect the experience the guest receives. We did enjoy our stay (mention to the lovely dog!) and we would come back, but there is no way we would stay in the annex.
Lovely welcome on arrival the staff were always to hand and looked after all our needs. Tasty breakfast well cooked and plentiful. Comfortable bed and despite being in a room facing the road we weren't disturbed and had an excellent nights sleep. Comfy bar and tasty bar meals.
This is really awful. It had musty smelling carpeting which they tried to cover up with terrible strong cleaners. (Think swimming pool chlorine plus moldy rag.) The combination was sickening so I couldn't stay but they wouldn't give even a partial refund. Lesson learned. Patrons beware this is the ultimate tourist trap. I would've rather slept in Sherwood Forest! Sherwood Forest is definitely worth the trip but avoid staying here.
Room was moldy and dank. Smelled horrible and we left immediately.
Highly recommend Sherwood Forest area and Major Oak, but this place should be condemned.
I had one complaint & that was there was dog mess in the car park far corner which was obviously old & some had been trodden in. Otherwise the room was clean, quite spacious & plenty of tea & coffee. The bathroom was clean & tidy with plenty of fresh towels. The breakfast was delicious & the staff were extremely friendly.
Quirky pub with lots of different little areas of seating. Nice big car park and small outdoor seating area. Lots to do in the area.
Just needs more staff, every time we wanted a drink or to order food we had to go looking for staff. Cooked breakfast was on the small side for portion and quite a long wait both to order and food to arrive.
Evening staff were very friendly and bar meals good value.
Room was a little noisy from bar below until closing time. Bed was comfy and room well equipped.
A small, homely hotel near Sherwood Forest. Comfortable rooms, very clean. A great bar with delicious and high-quality dishes and dinner at reasonable prices. A baby cot is provided upon request of very good quality. I was a little upset when the staff discussed political issues with the guests at the breakfast. Several nationalities were called stupid and inadequate, which is generally unacceptable for the service sector. Breakfast could have been better. There is no one at the reception all the time.
Nothing horrible to report. Good veggie options at the pub for dinner. The complimentary breakfast was as expected. The room was just a cramped room as advertised. The chairs were foot stools so working or eating at the fold out desk was awkward. Not bad overall just not a five star.
Staff were exceptional in making you feel at home. I would have given it 5 stars but there was no heating on and the room was quite cold at night. Otherwise everything was brilliant and would stay here again.
Arrived 55 mins early for check in and was abruptly told if we wanted to check in now then we’d have to pay an early check in fee we came back later to which the guy doing the check in was so rude to the guy in front of us. You need to have physical ID on you so they can copy it and then secure £50 against your credit card but they don’t take contactless either.
To get the rooms are really steep stairs and then the room (which we was told was the best there) was diabolical, the walls were pealing, wires everywhere and pealing wallpaper. You could feel all the springs in the matress and the quilt was thin and only just fitted the bed
Then went to have a shower and it goes from boiling hot to absolutely freezing cold there was no way you can shower properly there nor would you be able to put a child in there.
Was talked into breakfast at check in which is £10.50 for 1 bit of dried bacon, 1 egg, 1 sausage, a tub of beans a tomato and some mushrooms. I wish we went to the local cafe instead.
Nice stay, bed comfy, very helpful staff and owner. Great location
Only slight negative is they take a £50 pre authorisation on bank card for room and 2 weeks on it’s still pending on bank balance.

Not great
Despite the positives I wouldn’t stay again.
Positives - immaculately clean, friendly staff, lots of free on site parking. Hot shower.
Negatives - the room was absolutely freezing. I checked in at 7pm and put the electric heater on but it didn’t get remotely comfortable until midnight. Also very noisy. It’s an old building and it sounded like the people in the bar were in my room, I could hear every word of their conversation. Not great at 11.30pm
I so wanted to write a glowing review for this place as it was in the exact location we needed. I am from the local area originally and had come down for a family event. We were in room 3 which is right above the bar. When we first arrived we could hear a group of people talking and it sounded like they were actually in our room! We went to have a drink and were told that the bar was closing at 10 so we headed up to the room as had an early start the next day but the music continued until way after midnight. It was so loud I could name every song played (80’s rock classics). Then at 5 am the noise started again, sounding like members of staff arriving and chatting. The next night was much the same, in fact the music seemed to be turned up after 11pm.
The room was cheaply decorated, it’s a period building with wonky floors and beams and our windows appeared painted shut. The leather sofa had stains and rips on it and the shower was either boiling or freezing.
On a positive note, the breakfast was lovely and the member of staff serving at breakfast times deserves a mention as she was so friendly.
This place needs some money putting into it to make it more than just acceptable, it’s a great building in a great location but the noise was terrible and the decor needed sorting.
I am unable to wrap my head around the customer reviews for this hotel. It’s an older property but not tastefully or sympathetically converted to a BandB. Trunking slapped to the walls everywhere, gaffer tape holding carpets together, to highlight a few ghastly ‘maintenance’ fixes.
Breakfast: The coffee at breakfast can only be only described as akin to tarmac surface water. Beyond foul!
Room: During our unfortunate stay we rejoiced in counting the residents above our room emptying their bowels, urinating, and vomiting all over the bathroom. Such was the soundproof-ness.
The mattresses are well used and we found divots to sleep in. The bathroom had all the charm of a hostel for the homeless!
Staff: The housekeeping/breakfast ladies were both thoroughly pleasant with us.
Hygiene: The accommodation was clean, for the amount of nooks and crannies, trunking, etc to clean the only dust I found was behind the headboards. Minor, minor, evidence of mould in the bathroom grout but in relation to the many hotels I use this can only be described as clean.
