One particular male staff member quite assuming and condescending. When we asked re electric car charge points his response was ‘oh I wouldn’t get an electric car !’ . Extraordinary !

Disappointing experience

The main problem was the lift not working throughout our stay and we were on the 3rd floor. Also there were 2 coachloads of guests staying and the breakfast experience was very poor. On one day we had to queue, there was hardly any food and lots of uncleared tables. The room was clean and staff helpful but there were not enough to cope with the numbers. Our bathroom door was difficult to open from the inside which was a safety concern. We reported it as urgent but it was not fixed.

I don't think I like anything about this hotel. Didnt think I will write a bad review for a Marriott hotel. I had staged in different Marriott hotel around the world but this one is horrible. Mouldy stink in the bath area. The room is so small that if anyone who is claustrophobic should stay away. We had booked breakfast for one day, which is £15 per person. Coffee was horrible, baked beans, eggs and bacon were all out, no one cares to refill it until we asked. It was only before 9, we were not that late. If anyone do stay there, there are cafes near the hotel, only 3 mins walk, they sell full English breakfast around £10, or a bacon and egg bap at £6, very nice and fresh

Hotel need a complete revamp as the condition is worn out at best. The elevator was not working in the main wing so we were forced to walk up two floors, take the connection skyway to our block and then walk up or down the stairs in that block to reach our floor, which was very exhausting and tedious. When using the entrance across the street in the riverside block to save ourselves from climbing the stairs we were quite curtly told that the entrance is only for staff and that customers are required to undergo the ordeal on climbing multiple staircases to reach the other block.

Filthy room with leftover adult gummies under the vanity. Disgusting bathroom with black mold all around sink, and rusty handles in bathtub. Please avoid.

OK'ish stay

The mattress was worn and has seen better days probably a few years ago already. The airconditioning vents were exceptionally dusty - a hayfever challenge as they are blowing at the entry door and above the bed itself. The breakfast was overpriced for the quality provided. Not real value for money when compared to equivalent hotels in Newcastle or York

Disappointing stay

I have stayed here many times to visit my son and the experiences have been patchy. This visit was on the poor end of my experiences. I had booked 3 rooms and only 2 were ready when I arrived with my family at 3:45. We did not get the keys to the third room until after 9pm. The staff did not contact me to let me know the room was ready. The staff seemed very flustered and not focussed on customer experience (it was university graduation season and they were busy). There were no tissues in one of the room and insufficient coffee sachets for our stay. When we asked for more coffee, we were given tea. The lift to the rooms has been out of order for a couple of weeks and there was no offer to help us take our luggage up two flights of stairs. The room rates were really high (presumably due to demand) but the experience did not match the premium price point.

Pleasant weekend

We had a warm welcome and the reception staff were very friendly and efficient . The didn’t mention the loyalty to join to get 10% off food and drink it was only I noticed it on the wall. Car park gets very busy but they helped us get parked when we couldn’t find a space. The room was ok and was meant to be delux room. It was a pleasant room but I wouldn’t describe it as delux. It was nice having air con. The shower head didn’t attach properly to the rod. Bed was comfortable . We ate in the bar and the food was very tasty. Didn’t have breakfast there. Well located for the town which was lively and close to the cathedral and castle. Plenty of places to eat. Town is up a hill but not too steep. It is also only about we minutes from beamish

Lovely, older but very dignified hotel. Wonderful food in restaurant and excellent service. Handy for walking up the hill to the Cathedral and for walking to other areas like the main square and shops. I loved it. Very comfortable room and nice big bathroom. Definitely recommended.

Perfect spot

We chose the hotel at random, knowing it was central and had on site parking. In fact it was the perfect choice for exploring the city. Close to all the historic sites, and easy walking to restaurants and pubs. The staff were very friendly and efficient - which made the stay even better.
