You can rent a bike just around the corner and get the entire family equipped with bikes and helmets, it is by far one of the best ways to explore in the National Park. Take a picnic on the day and you can sit and watch the deer graze and wander free around the fields.
Local shops a couple of minutes walk where there is a great selection of breads, scones etc., also serving hot and cold food, coffees etc, with off licence/Take Out for that all important bottle of wine. Getting around is easy, few minutes walk to the town centre, hire a car, take a big red bus which takes you around the main tourist attractions, get a taxi or hire a horse and trap and listen to the 'blarney' from the local jarveys. There is a local chauffeur on the estate, which you can hire, he also has a mini bus for larger groups. St. Mary’s Cathedral towers amongst the clouds with a backdrop of Killarney’s glorious lakes and mountains. Visitors are welcome to attend mass and/ or to explore this wonderful church at leisure. Eileen will have all the details for you on arrival and will advise you on best places to eat and best local irish pubs. You will have fresh irish brown bread, scones, butter, tea and coffee on your arrival. This home combines the warmest of welcomes and hospitality with modern luxurious facilities. Set alongside Killarney National Park, which has 26,000 acres of 'free to roam' parkland, this is a great location in which to explore the amazing surroundings which offers guests spectacular walking trails, cycle routes, historic tours, horse riding and lake activities. The house has a large spacious bright kitchen/diner which is well equipped with top of the range appliances, high class fitted kitchen with a separate laundry room. Large table and chairs seats 8 people. There is a wonderful wood-burning stove in which to cosy up to in the long evenings. Everything is brand new as this property is being let for the first time. All the bedrooms are en-suite, with wooden floors in each bedroom. If you like walking, cycling, horse riding this is the place to come. Take a bike and cycle around the magnificent Lakes of Killarney and take in the many breathtaking views along the way, or trot along on horseback and really get away from it all.
South and west of the town of Killarney is an expanse of rugged mountainous country. This includes the McGillycuddy's Reeks, the highest mountain range in Ireland, over 1000 metres high. At the foot of the mountains are the world famous Lakes of Killarney. Here lies the 26,000 acres Killarney National Park, which is just minutes from your doorstep. The distinctive combination of mountains, lakes, woods and waterfalls give the area a very special scenic beauty. Experience the wildlife as you walk along, wild red deer roam freely, rabbits and hares scuttle by and I do hope you are lucky enough to experience the magnificent Golden Eagle, (re-introduced during the last few years).
Walk the beautiful grounds of Muckross House, a 19th century mansion featuring all the necessary furnishings and artefacts of the period and is a major visitor attraction. Explore the arboretum, tour Muckross House and view the rooms Queen Victoria stayed in on her visit, when her bed was flown in, and many existing flourishes had been added to this majestic house for her arrival along with her entourage.
Muckross House and grounds are amazing, there simply aren't enough hours in the day to spend here.
Visit Torc Waterfall, Ross Castle or take a jaunting car; tours operate where no motor traffic is permitted.
If you want to go further you would not be in Kerry without visiting Dingle, on the way stop off at Inch Beach, where surfers, locals and those who have heard of the strand's breathtaking views come together.
Brave the Blaskets if you dare. Take the Slea Head drive from Dingle and go the the long way round through Ventry and past Paidi O Shea's pub. Suddenly you come to the sight of the three Blasket Islands in all their glory. Down in Dunquin, you can take a boat from the pier to the Great Blasket, where the echoes of Peig Sayers still ring around the deserted houses and stonewalls.
Don't forget to visit the Interpretation Centre with its views of the Great Blasket Island from the panoramic window. Stroll around and view the local art, artefacts and learn some irish history and culture. Don't forget to stop off at the coffee shop for freshly made scones, butter and jam.
Killarney's McGillycuddy's Reeks, Ireland's highest mountain range, form a backdrop to the park and offer fantastic outdoor opportunities for hikers and climbers. The area also offers ample choice for golfing, fishing, horse-riding, canoeing, cycling and swimming, letting you choose how best to experience the natural highlights of the area.
